Hmn I would have to say that they should retire it for a few seasons. What exactly did they say he died from?

No. Unless they want to start retiring every player's jersey that dies. It's tragic and it always seems like a nice sign of respect, but it seems to lessen the feats of the other players that have their jersey's retired for outstanding careers. To use NASCAR again, if they had decided to retire the #3 when Earnhardt died, then it becomes demeaning to the other drivers that lost their lives in the sport and didn't have their number retired. Just my opinion.

Zack i guess that's where you and i differ. The last person to die tragically (baseball) i'm pretty sure was Thurman Munsen (please correct me if i'm wrong) and pretty much the day or 2 after the yankees had his # on the wall i just think as a sign of respect to not only Mr. Kile but his family that his jersey should be retired.........

Jamie, look at Munsons career #'s....

CAREER G AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB IBB SO SH SF HBP AVG OBP SLG

These are catcher numbers worthy of having a jersey retired

  • nobodys jersey gets retired unless you earn it. Doesn't matter who you are at what you might of did. Rip and god bless his family!

I don't think they should retire his number. That's like saying if Greg Ostertag died like this...would the Utah Jazz retire his number? I doubt it...it's the same situation. You can't just retire someone's number because they tragically die...that's wrong in my opinion.
  • As a lifelong StL Cardinal fan and resident of St Louis for 40 years, I have to say not unless he is inducted sometime down the road. As tragic as it is, a career that just RE-started would have probably waranted it in the future, but has not met with what is normally considered and that is enough numbers....having said that, the owners will most likely retire it to honor him as a Cardinal and St Louisan.
