Decisions, decisions. Should I sell some cards or not.

I have been going back and forth for a while in deciding if I should sell some excess cards that I don't really look at or have any attachment to. I have complete sets from 1970-1979 which I never look at. I have extra star cards of Mays, Clemente, Aaron... that I like but don't really need. Everytime I get a pile together to sell in order to free up money for other parts of my collection I get cold feet and put them back in the cabinet. I have sold some items but still need to pull the trigger on some of the bigger items. Does this happen others?

Here's my 2 cents. A few years ago, I sold a few autos to pay for a super nice camera and lens. Got a lot of lasting memories I wouldn't trade for anything. Every now and then I think about the autos I sold, but I can replace them (it will probably cost me more than I originally paid for them, but I can replace them). I cant replace the memories captured with the camera though. So I guess it depends on how much the items are worth to you and what will you be using the cash for to replace what you sold.

“cards that I like but don’t really need” describes every card owned by every collector

Agreed. You don't "need" cards. You have cards you love & want to hang onto & cards you don't. Trim the fat on your collection. I've done the same thing. Of course I usually do that when something pricey comes up that I really want.

I'm all about that Jordan stuff. Cards, stickers, posters & whatever else is cool. The rarer the better. And always in a PSA 10 if I can help it.
Any other big Jordan nuts out there let me know.

I am pro-sell. A smaller, more focused collection of quality items with sentimental value is where it’s at. Quality over quantity. Trim the fat, you won’t regret it.

I couldn't have said it better.

I don’t think I have sold a card since I was a kid in the 80s at my family garage sale.

If you are reluctant to sell then you probably should not. When properly motivated you will know and do what is right for you.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I usually sell when I can’t swing the mortgage payment.

I am actively selling right now some duplicates in my collection to obtain something else that I really want. I hate selling at all, but I also am aware that it is a trade-off. I don't have unlimited funds, and in fact operate on a pretty small budget (compared to a lot of other folks.) So some stuff I bought cheap years ago is getting ready to be sold so I can obtain something else that costs a lot (but that will be really cool) and that I can enjoy.

I’m selling everything that doesn’t belong in my personal collection and turning it into unopened that I hopefully am able to keep unopened.
