The infamous bearded Mantle lol
But seriously its hard for me to fathom that this card is worth $6500 especially with all the damage to it....

I just hope I never run into a bearded Joe Louis card. It would just destroy me.
Thanks ! I'll never get to sleep tonight !
This card is what inspired Topps to make their Who Am I Set!
We cringe because of what the cards have become, value-wise. I did that as a kid to some of my cards in the late 70s, as did kids before and after me. It was no big deal at the time and it just turns out that kids in the 50s, by doing this, helped make the better-conditioned cards of the era that much more valuable down the road, and thus even the best of the beaters have some value too. By the 70s, the cards were likely printed in greater numbers and more were saved in better condition, so a similar 1979 Ozzie Smith "Beard" card would have very little value to most.
Frankly, I would be surprised if that card sold for anywhere near the asking price, but then again, I have been surprised before.
Here is the real question.....who would spend $6,000+ for THAT?
Grading question for the experts... The listing description says the card is “altered” because of the beard, but wouldn’t that make it an MK? “Altered” per PSA means “trimming, recoloring, restoration, and/or cleaning”. Maybe it’s enough of a mark that it’s considered recolored, even though it’s the wrong colors? Not at all interested in purchasing, but just wondering if there’s something else going on with the card that’s not being disclosed...
Jim
I think it is labeled altered because someone attempted to erase the beard.
