Bulk-submitting “pack-fresh” vintage: best way to go about it?

As some of you know, my favorite year for collecting is 1971, in the best condition possible. As of today I’m up to 110 (3 graded, and 2 blob variations), and I was curious, would it be wise to bulk-submit? I id imagine some of the cards would be worth more than the declared value, and while I know it doesn’t affect the grade itself, would it be better to just submit cards in smaller bulk submissions? Should I pull out some of the bigger names and submit the commons? Is declared value based on APR? I’m not trying to put the cart ahead of the horse, assuming good grades, I just want to be prepared. Thanks! Love seeing everyone’s ‘National’ pick ups and threads, hoping to go next year!

If you send in a bulk sub of all 71's it might make the turnaround faster....maybe. You for sure want to make sure the higher $$ stars are submitted under regular and not bulk. While you may have cards that come back valued over or well over $100, they probably won't upcharge you unless there are a lot or maybe 8's of Ryan, Munson, Clemente... for example. I would also say that no matter how you submit them, expect that you are going to get some back that you will probably want to crack and resub. And don't be surprised if the vast majority come back lower than what you expect. They are brutal on 71's. If you compare older graded 71's to newer graded you will see a big difference, imo. So if you are using already graded cards to compare what you have, for sure use newer slabs. I wish you the best of luck with your subs, no matter how you decide to send them in!

    Muahahaha! I’ll never tell!!!

Jk. Most have come from private deals. If I see a buyer selling a few ‘71s amongst other things, I’ll send them a message and ask if they happened to have anymore they’d like to sell. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I bought about 20 from a guy who said they came right from rack packs and into a binder. I was pretty thrilled with that. And some from GregMorris Cards on eBay. For instance, this Johnny Jeter I have, I bought for 6 bucks raw, and sent it in for grading, and was thrilled with the grade! Greg Morris has probably been my favorite to buy from, I’d say. You can get NR mint/mint ‘71s for under 10$ bucks, where others will sell far less quality for far more. I’ve gotten a lot of great vintage from their site at a fraction of what most people sell them for on other sites.

I had two collectors show me their raw 1971 purchases from the National last week, 8 or 9 quality type cards. I was amazed they were able to buy those raw high end examples at the show.

I bet markers and crayons worked quite well at the national to spiff those up. JK

I just had a decent batch pop under a BULK submission from a set I bought on ebay - didn't hassle me on the stars as there weren't many 8's. Fairly graded IMHO:

Since they probably see a lot of touched up 71's, I'd put them all together to add some provenance to the star cards.

Regarding where to find them, my best luck finding submittable cards in lots or sets has come from sets that weren't advertised as high grade and where the condition throughout varied a ton, even by vintage Topps standards. Most sets I've bought that were more uniform were cherry picked.

I've submitted thousands of '71s and I ended up splitting them across different graders. They grade them so inconsistently that I prefer to not have them all go to one grader in case he grades them like they should look like modern refractors. I've had little luck getting 9s over the years even with high grade set breaks and sending cards right out of the rack pack. I did get 5-6 9s on a small sub last year though. Not sure why I hit the jackpot after so many years of futility.

Never thought of that; I’m probably going to sub some here at the end of August. Thanks!

71's seem to be graded with new/modern card standards. Seems unfair. Someone mentioned about it being tougher to get high grades now.....It is much tougher. I've seen 7's that were every bit as good as some 9's. 8's have to be very high end to get an 8. Many sources agree with me on this. I know some veteran collectors who are done submitting 71 baseball because of this.

I can see how that could be frustrating - I’m super stoked to get mine submitted for grading however! They are beautiful cards regardless what they come back in the holder as. Probably looking at the end of August for my first bulk submission (CC bulk that is)! I have some other vintage I’d like graded, so I may submit those as part of the 15 vouchers.

Forgot to thank you as well! I’ll do the higher $$ separate, good call!
