Hello, I just recently joined the forum and have really enjoyed it so far. I have already learned a great deal. I recently purchased this medal and after doing some research, I found it described in the attached page of "Travels Through Germany, Bohemia, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, and Lorrain", Vol. 4 by John George Keysler. This is from the 3rd edition printed in 1760. Anyway, I thought this was pretty interesting.

The book is just as neat of a find as the medal itself. Very cool.

Do you have any ideas as to why some of the letters are large sized and some are small?

    Great medal.

I'll bet the view of the old part of city looks very similar today, assuming it didn't get damaged in the bombing raids over Germany during WWII.

Hey, thanks. I was wondering the same about the letter sizes myself. I believe Regensburg survived WW 2 pretty well but it was heavily damaged during the Napoleonic Wars. I've been interested in coins since I was a kid but I just started collecting the last couple of years. I only really collect pre twentieth century European coins and medals with Thalers being my favorite. Thanks for the replies.

Thank you. That’s fascinating about it being a chronogram. Thanks for the info!

Welcome @jimhopkins1919! Great inaugural post. I live mainly in the pre 1800 German States collecting realm with some side stops in Austrian and Italian States material. Love to see whats on your mind or in your pockets in future posts.

Curiosity got the best of me on the medal in the original post. I found some examples in past auctions at Kuenker, Hess Divo, Teutoburger, and Gorney & Mosch. I prefer www.acsearch.info for this research; I use one of the free user IDs to see info but not prices. The issue commemorated the end of the plague. The individuals depicted on the obverse are Noah and his 3 sons before the burning alter. A rather spectacular gold 10 ducat strike was sold in 2014 in the Hess Divo auction 327 in lot 461 (https://acsearch.info/search.html?id=2177764)

    Silver medal 1714, unsigned. 44.04 mm; 30.09 g. Plato 193; Coll. Brettauer 1408.

It is called a Chronogram. The large letters together should be Roman numerals for a date, but I cannot figure it out.
Oh, wait. Add the numerals and you get 1714.

:o I've never seen such a thing. Good to know.

Link to old thread on chronograms in 2012. Image links are mostly gone but information is still relevant.

Hey, thanks for the info about www.acsearch.info, I was unaware that existed. I saw a bronze version on there as well. That gold one is incredible. I might have to break down and get that one week premium account now! I could only find two other examples of the medal before looking on that site.

Chronogram, I'm going to remember that for future reference. Thanks. Something I didn't know before. I love CU. Peace Roy

I haven't received it yet but I recently purchased this medal from Kuenker. Like the previous medal, this medal was minted to celebrate the ending of the recent plague and is a Chronogram as well. This one is from Hamburg and is from 1714 as well. I believe both medals are in regards to the Great Northern War plague outbreak.
