Would/should the 1933 Saint be Registry #1?

Would this single coin entry, into a Saint Registry (either here, or with NGC) instantly be number 1? And, if so- should it?

  • I don't think so, because the piece is going to be brutally overgraded. image

Even in MS64+ (my estimate upon seeing the coin, but admittingly- what do I know? It's next to impossible to "grade" from 3+ feet away through that plexiglass and three armed Mint Police breathing down your neck!), don't you think it would top out any Registry? If not, why not? A "POP 01" coin in ALL Grades is tough to beat!

How about the Wire Edge High Relief in MS-69?

The Sotheby's photos don't make the coin look good. Not bad, but that hit on the knee looks serious.

  • Trust me, no one buying that coin is in the PCGS regestry.

    Bill,

I would suggest that the winner might be a current or former Registrant. A lot of the big name collectors are going to want this one.

The lord needs to help me braddick, I was thinking the same thoughts, now that is very scaryimage I have no clue how PCGS registry would rank this set, no doubt it would be #1 on NGC's list, perhaps it should be with an asteriskimage Anyway, doubtless the scoring would go up in a year when it was resubmitted to PCGS and upgraded to a MS66.

I would bet that NGC would list it in the set, but as a non-competitive coin. They did that with one or two Trade Dollar proofs.

It's just one coin, big deal. I wouldn't have the thing except to sell it and buy good coins! The same thing goes for the 1804 Dollar. For christ sakes, it's not even really an 1804. They remade them in 1834. What's up with that.

Give me the classic series any day!

Right on Ken. Can you imagine the coins you could buy with the money that THING will go for. Just makes one drool to think about it. A full set of Mercs FB, SLQ's FH and Walkers full hand wouldn't even make a dent in it. I think I need a cold shower.

It would need to have a star, indicating it is not required for the series, just like the 1913 Liberty Nickels. I think coins that are a "one of a kind" will never be in the registry system since PCGS wants to entice people to build a complete set. I know I would have second thoughts about building a set if I knew that I would never be able to finish it. Just my 2 Cents

PCGS should start a STOLEN from the Mint Registry. This way all of those coins could have a home and would not have to be labled as optional. The 1933 Saint, The 1964 Peace Dollar, 1913 Liberty Nickel etc.

      Don't forget the mule Sacs.
    5. Going back to the original question, the answer is no. The 1933 is listed as an optional coin, and even if it was not, it would only be worth 1.25 points to your set rating if it was graded as MS-65 as PCGS says it is. At present the Saint Gaudens registry is not weighted and the rarity of a coin does not mean much.

I still would not mind adding it to my set image
