    @hankcaddy

Are you working on Phillies team sets for other years also?

    @PaulMaul

Primarily all the 70's sets but also 52, 59, 68, 69 . By working on all of them I find I don't get bored.
Have completed the 74,77 and 78 ( with the exception of the hand cut team card)
Mostly going for PSA 9 for the 70's sets except 71 in 8.

    currently collecting baseball of
    2004 spx
    1989 topps psa 10
    1959 phillies
    Phillies of the 70's

Here is my small (but growing!) 1971 PSA collection, 9’s are all along the bottom. I have 37 in the assembly phase, and I’m really hoping they all come back 8’s or higher! I’m gonna send in the Ken Tatum for review, bc I honestly can’t find anything wrong with the card lol

    The Tatum:

If you can get all 37 back PSA 8 or better, I will worship you!

tiny dot by the R , between r and e. Slight tilt. very slight. Super card. but I don't think you get a 10. I sent in Jesus and 12 of his buddies and got a 9, 11 8's, and one 5. They just are not giving any 10's now. At least not to me. Good Luck

    HA! You’re funny 😂
I’d crap my pants if they came back all 8’s or better! I have scans, perhaps I’ll post what I sent in.

Lemme get a better pic, as that has a slight camera tilt. I’ll scan it real quick.
I’m confused as to what you sent in btw? In 1971?

  • RoflesRofles Posts: 752 ✭✭✭✭✭

So all the snow on this scan is from the scanner, so eliminate that from analysis. I’m not seeing any print dots whatsoever.

Here’s a pic with the phone.

    Backside:

Sigh. I’m looking at the backside, there’s ONE little chip.
Gahh. I may send in anyways, we’ll see!

With the new photo, looks better. It looks like a 10 , PSA is not giving many now adays. But I"d take a shot.

Sorry but the 71 set doesn't do it for me; just don't care for the look of the black border. I could see myslef with no hair left trying to complete this set.

This has been a joy for me over the past few years since I started. It’s my favorite set, not only because of the challenge, but because the black borders make the card look amazing! Best of luck on your endeavors!

You too. My 72 set is coming along; maybe a few more years of additional upgrades and I can relax.

71s are like bagpipe performances. When they are good (deeply inked and in nice shape) they are fantastic. When they are bad (uneven or light inking, tilted, worn) they are awful.

    I _loved_the chase ....
I just got tired of putting 1 "worthy" card in the set every three months. Too tough to find examples that met my strict centering, corners and coloring requirements :)
    I got it down to 48 !
That coupled with a swing in my collecting direction - High Grade Stars
I commissioned the set to GMCARDS2. They sold about two weeks ago....
Hope you set collector guys saw them and plucked a few.... They were sharp (IMHO)

Already picked up a 1964 Mantle and some HG Seavers and Benchs with the proceeds to kick start my new direction.
I also kept a few cards that softened the blow - Banks 8.5, Murcer (perfectly centered and sharp with bump potential), Gibson, Carlton -

Did you have the pop 1 mint 9 go? Man I wanted that!!

I bought 13 slabs from that and was super stoked! Rest assured, they are in good hands and will be enjoyed for years to come! 😁😁😁

Should the time come for the stars, gimme a shout and best wishes on your new collection!

I picked up the Gene Mauch. Really nice!

...And the Tatum does look basically perfect, but you just won’t ever get a 10 on any 1971 card today. Getting a 9 on a ‘71 is like getting a 10 on a ‘72.

Assuming you mean the Gary Gentry PSA 9 1of1,
I had a Gentry in my partial set but it was an 8.
The seller slipped the "9" in with my set run and sold it that way - guess he was hoping to build interest in the card with the current set builders. My Gentry "8" sold a little later...

If Eric Olander needed the card - he would have been interested. Not sure if he's even looking for "9"s he needs anymore - thought i saw his set has been retired.

No I didn’t submit them, bought them in a recent probstein auction. Had some extra money, so I bid on the relatively cheap ones!

My 37 card submission is in QA2 though!! Gahhh!!

I wonder if we're observing the break-up of one of the most amazing (near) sets ever assembled....
Eric Olanders - Black Beauty Perfection (1971 Topps Baseball - All PSA 9's)

His set seemed to stall around 93% for a long time....
About the same time that PSA tightened their grades on vintage (especially 1971's)
(my humble opinion only, garnered from multiple submissions of 1971's over the years - and echoed by other forum
    members that submitted 1971's))

His set recently moved from active to RETIRED.

    If I swung and missed....
I apologize to all connected parties....

His 1972 set was just auctioned by Probstein, so it would make sense....

I was hoping to maybe get back into collecting the PSA 7 HOFers/checklists (after I've had a couple "false starts" years ago)...but I'm a bit discouraged right now. :( Is it just me or have the prices of even PSA 7's gone up in light of that 2020 Topps Heritage coming out? Not to mention this year is it's 50th birthday :(

Even if we can only get 1-2 PSA 7's at a time that'd be perfectly okay but I don't know of any place that sells them for a reasonable price. :(
