Who cares? Opinions are opinions. The basis for a motivational speaker is to motivate and make you feel good. Brilliant marketing for the National: motivate you prior to the hobby's main event to open your wallet, spend like crazy and feel good about it. We all collect for a reason---- maybe a learned behavior, the chase, the upgrade, landing the white whale or bringing back childhood memories of simpler times that brings smiles to our face. There are no rules to collecting--- collect what you like, like what you collect. In my opinion the "younger" , say 10-12 year old generation do not have the dollars or patience to actually be considered collectors. It's instant gratification backed and paid for by Mommy and Daddy. PROMETHIUS88: Love the story about the ballgame, drinking beers and giving away cards, priceless----brings a smile to my face.
Gary buys wrestling cards so I am happy. I follow his Instagram and I enjoy his free content. I say welcome!
BUYING Frank Gotch T229 Kopec Looking to BUY n332 1889 SF Hess cards and high grade cards from 19th century especially. "Once you have wrestled everything else in life is easy" Dan Gable
He pimped it on Twitter and then listed it and sold it to one of his disciples for $300.
It was funny to read all of the comments about how sick this card is and amazing and yet anyone who collects wrestling cards seriously knows it is garbage compared to many other Hogan signed items.
There is no doubt he is going to bring in a lot more eyeballs and that will turn into buyers. One of my least favorite terms is "side hustle" because you sound like a total loser saying it but many are responding that they are going to turn to cards to try and make extra money. This just means fresh buyers and for sellers that is a good thing.
He seems truly interested in cards and I think there are probably a lot of haters out there that don't like seeing a guy just show up and get so much attention and I think it is great there is a voice that is so loud online pushing trading cards.
The thing that I find interesting is that he’ll talk about investing in a particular card. How he says it’ll be the next big thing and that he’s buying them up and tells everyone to also buy that same card because it’s about to catch fire. Everyone does (because he gets a lot of views) and now prices now go up and he dumps his at the highest cost. Genius.

He sounds like he may have invented the "buyer group".
Reminds of Wolf of Wall Street / Boileroom stuff on a smaller level. Buy these now or you are going to regret it. Pump and dump. Not necessarily what is going on but he is no idiot. He probably has some sort of agenda besides just love of collecting, but unlike me he has an audience that follows him and he is an influencer. I am just a guy that buys cards and sells a few so I can buy the ones I want more.
So here's my take. I could be right I could just be flinging a pile of dung, you be the judge. Guys like this that come in and try to make a big splash to make some quick money aren't at all good for the hobby. Guy is smart and from what it looks like, is a marketing genius. I personally think he comes across as a tool bag but opinions vary. Honestly, I think people like this are the root of the problems we are seeing today. A dude with what appears to be minimal knowledge about cards comes in and gets his followers, who have even less knowledge than he does, to buy in and start "investing" in this or that creating false markets. Someone gets left holding the bag after reality sets in again. It also may bring in less than scrupulous people who are willing to take advantage of the hobby.....as we are well aware of many of those are working hard to cheat collectors today. I haven't heard what he is telling his followers or why he thinks this card or that card is a good investment but with a lot of questions looming in the overall hobby today, I hope he discusses all of the issues and the ultimate risks associated with it. On the flip side, I agree that it "could" bring in new collectors to the hobby for the long haul but I'm guessing the majority of the people that are taking his advice are just looking to make a quick buck.
Could he just be another JCL (Johnny come lately)? Sure.
Could he be just an opportunist? Sure.
Will he last? Who knows?
My impression of him leaves me lacking in that:
In order to be "loved" as a purveyor in our hobby?
You have to have the business savvy of a tycoon, the patience of a saint in dealing with the public, the reverence of a true collector in handling people's lifetime collections, the humility of Lincoln and the honesty of Mother Teresa.

I wish him the best of luck.

I wasn't super excited with him either.
