The Ohio politicians heard about Ohio resident Neil Armstrong whose family has been selling off his coin collection including one gold medal for $2,000,000.
This from someone who has been intimately INVOLVED in getting the exemption back and then trying to protect it for all Ohio consumers.
The tax will resume on October 1 of this year.
The state bean counters have estimated that taxing coin dealers will produce over $5 million dollars in revenue. This is, I'm sure, based on sales numbers from the last two years- tax exempt years. My business DOUBLED in the first year of the exemption and I'm sure many other Ohio dealers showed similar numbers. They did not listen; the new sales numbers will be SIGNIFICANTLY less as bullion dollars again flow out to neighboring states with exemptions.
I find it very strange that many Ohio dealers gripe about what was/is going on without ever having tried to do something constructive about it. For many years about a half dozen of us fought to get the exemption reinstated after loosing it to the "Noe" effect. We formed a precious metals group and funded the hiring of a lobbiest who, for over 4 years, spoke on our behalf and worked to gain the exemption. We asked MANY other dealers in Ohio to help defray the cost of hiring him but most replied that it was a hopeless situation and they didn't want to throw away their money. When we WON they were happy to enjoy the increased business riding on the coattails of those of us who did all the work testifying at committee hearings and funding the costs. When it was in jeopardy those same dealers couldn't be found with a search warrant to donate to the cost of a new lobbiest.
A few last minute phone calls to your representatives and the governors office IS NOT ENOUGH! It took, and will again take, a concerted and combined effort to attempt to regain an exemption. It will cost money, and time, over the next few years to even have a chance. Will we be able to count on more dealers and collectors to help defray the expense?
If you were not part of the team, or will not be part of the next team, I think you have lost the right to complain about the situation. So, get involved and help regain the exemption that we all believe we deserve.
I'm a little on my soapbox here but after spending thousands of dollars and many hours of time and travel without much support from other dealers it gets a little old to hear some of them gripe about it. So, at the risk of sounding a little like a grumpy old man, put up for the fight or shut up and live with what you have.
Any apologies to anyone who has donated that I do not know about........;it would be very few......
Let me know if you want to be part of the team going forward.
Brad
Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
Wow... alright, settle down. Back to the post topic. As I type there are 38 comments. Not a single one referencing a call and/or email to the Representatives of Ohio. Believe it or not, they do listen. The way it works is that a staffer answers contacts. Each is then logged under a heading, in this case taxes. On a regular bases an aide will open said file and assess how far to proceed. In most cases the Representative is handed a briefing from his constituents if the file warrants it.. The sad reality is that they want to keep their "job", so yes in the end they will listen. So contact your Representative.

Ebay handed over a fat $320,000 to the Hill for a twenty minute speech. At least we know where the usurious fees are going.

Yep-some people apparently just can't help it.
Such taxes cannot and do not add enough to a state’s coffers to make them worth the effort and expense of collecting them.
