There are 3s Type of 1908 DE. Type 1 uses the same hubs as 1907 and suffers from all the same problems, except detail is >a bit better overall because the mints knew more about handling the split collar and planchets.

I used a 1908-D motto for my "1908 date requirement" even though I took a huge points hit.
The type 1908 NM is just too ugly.

Recommend getting a 1928 for those who want ONE saint for their set.
Beautifully sharp hits & nice toning w/ a decent price. (also graded correctly or maybe even a touch under)
Maybe a 23-D (I know a couple of really nice ones for sale now----Not mine)

This is why I never caught the mint state gold bug. For most issues you need to hit MS66-MS67 or better to find a nice relatively mark free example. That is fine for a type coin, but I wouldn't want thousands of dollars tied up in otherwise very common coins.

Personally, I'm happy with a lot of 64 that are well selected. (maybe even 63 if you are really good)

    look at the renman65 set

Hate to sound harsh but I see it as 62 possibly a push 63 and wish the seller good luck. Perhaps in hand it’s a real blazer and eye appeal carries the day.

The three distinct 1908 types are:
Type 1 - 1907 obverse and reverse hub
Type 2 - new 1908 obverse and 1907 reverse hub
    Type 3 - new 1908 obverse and new 1908 with/motto reverse.

There are many easily observed features separating the three types.

I always thought the 1908 Saints got the most ...uh... liberal variance. Grainy things.
