Canada 1888 25 cent Grade???

YQQYQQ Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭✭✭

this coin is for sale in Europe.
What do you guys think it will grade at our host?
The seller is using the typical "over exposure" which, IMO, is only used to hide imperfections.
I asked the seller to have it graded. he replied that he does not trust any TPG.. for his personal reasons.
and
what would it be worth?

I will reveal what the seller is asking later.
thanks guys

Wow, rims look good; hairlines would be hard to see. Base of bust at neck looks to have a bit of chatter. I wonder if it would make a 62?
I have no idea of value but see it goes logarithmic with increasing grade. A certified 63 would be at least a couple of thousand, whilst a 58 would be 1/3 or less of this I would imagine.

MS64... wait a minute, no. Hold on- AU58, I guess, but could be MS62 if there aren't any hairlines. Or maybe it's cleaned? Final answer. I think.

You're considering buying based on that picture?

The ugly toning may take it down a bit. However I do see what could be minute wear in portions of the hair (temple and earlobe) .. but hard to tell from the photo. I'd go with the 58.

The images are not helpful. We are merely guessing. The real question is whether you like the look of the coin as it stands. In view of the owner's refusal to grade the coin, and if the asking price is at a number that reflects that the coin is MS, perhaps you can negotiate a sliding scale on what to pay for the coin if it is your intention to have it graded by PCGS. Maybe the owner would agree to x now and if it grades at a higher number say 63 or so, then he would get an additional amount based the the terms of the sliding scale that was agreed to.

If all of that sounds to confusing, and you are still interested, see if you can get a return privilege of 30 days or some time that is mutually agreeable. I suspect that time will likely not be long enough to have it graded, but that will give you time for an in hand review and perhaps you can show it to others you know that are skilled at grading.

I do think this coin has potential and is at least worth exploring to see if some of the risk can be minimized. I think it has an outside shot at an MS grade, however the images really are not helpful in determining the quality of the coins surfaces. It very well could be original but there could be issues with the fields in terms of hairlines, luster impairment etc that diminish the quality and overall grade.

Thank you all, Great answers and very helpful in the decision making process..
My decision is, mostly based on your answers which confirm what I had in mind. My first impression was" wowww".
But then the warning signs popped up and they said Stop.
Now, I will not buy and not even make an offer.
My reasons are: The seller is not prepared to eliminate many questions and "ifs" because he is unwilling to have the coin assessed professionally.
The other reason is that he is unwilling, but able , to supply better images showing details.
he replied that the images were taken with a light box and a Macro lens. That may be so, but the pictures most certainly do not show what we should see on a uncertified ** USD 2050+ coin.
he is offering the coin raw @ approx. USD 2050.
    **he gardes it CH UNC.

My wallet also thanks all of you. :)

Zero chance I buy that coin as Unc (let alone choice unc), uncertified and with those washy photos.

Has wear on the neck, 58 at best.

I am sorry to say I do not like the look of the coin at all. Furthermore I would not buy this coin based on this photo even if I found the ugly yellow over variegated dark toning tolerable. By the way , I do like well toned unmessed with coins (lol).
    There are better opportunities.

As I read this thread, a question comes to mind. When looking at the potential value of world coins if you can get them straight graded, what are some price guides, etc you most trust. I am more familiar with certain US coins, and realize that sold prices are the true guide.

But is there a most accurate price guide in your opinion?
