2019 Topps Finest - 2 Box break deconstruction

2019 Topps Finest

This was “the” set in 1993; perhaps a set that changed the card collecting world?

In a short period of time, we went from the “classic” white bordered BB card - offset printed - simple - classical; and then we got bombarded with full bleed, UV coated, Dufex, Refractor, Superfractor, Atomic Refractor….

Not complaining - the photos on early editions like 92F Ultra and 92 TSC e.g.? Extraordinary IMO.

So, let’s fast forward to 2019.

I picked up 2 boxes - each box having a minibox of 6 packs with 1 auto guaranteed.

The cards? Well, you know. They’re “Finest!”

The base set is numbered to 101 and then there’s the rub - the “extended base set” of 25 comes ONE per box!
That’s SPs on steroids IMO.

And, of course, the base set will consist of a refractor for every regular card “and” the obligatory parallels - 1/1, #/5, #/25…and another wrinkle - #/5 and #25 also has a “Wave” refractor!

Complicated enough?

Did I just feel a tremor in the "Force?" I think I just heard a vein pop in one of the “vintage” collectors?

The cards look good, the autos are OK - direct on the card - a bit light for my taste but no complaints.

I was very fortunate - of the 4 autos - I landed an Acuna (ROY) and Yelich (MVP) auto - very nice.

(I put the regular Acuna card next to the auto for comparison)

There’s a cool Rivera subset - didn’t pull any.

In summary:

44/101 of the base set (43.6%)
8 Refractors
2 - Extended base set cards
2 #/250
1 #/150
1 #/99 (no one to write home on with the parallels)
#23/25 Sal Perez Auto
#25/25 W. Astudillo Auto

So, that’s it. While the base set is doable? The extended? I don’t think so.

If anyone picks any up? Please post and tell me what you think?

Thanx!

Mike

Nice pulls Mike. Sad to say I have no idea who these players are but I have enjoyed Finest cards since '92.

That’s a good couple of boxes there. I’m probably going to pick up a box of Finest this week. Will post what I get.

Astudillo is a really fun player. Chubby dude who can play any position, plays with joy, and, going against current trend, never strikes out.

Dave & Adams @ 120 for a box is pretty good and right now - I believe the lowest from a reliable source. The guy I bought from has raised his price to 124.

Ended up picking up 2 boxes as well, from a local shop. I like the cards. Collation was not good, as box 2, which I assume came from the same case, repeated half the cards from box one.

Pretty happy overall though. Autos were all rookies: Ryan Borucki, Willians Astudillo, Kyle Tucker Finest Firsts Green /99, and the big one was Pete Alonso blue /150. I’m going to collect Alonso because he’s a Gator, so that was a good bonus.

Refractors worked out well too: Wil Myers /99, Altuve /250, Kershaw, Ohtani, Soto, Yelich.

Stone, I’m not going to put the set together so let me know what you need and anything I’m not keeping for my player collections I’m happy to send your way.

Overall I was able to add to my collections of a bunch of players, stash away some rookies (Jimenez and 2 Alonsos, among others), and unwind a bit. So it was a good break.

    Not bad results.

What did the local shop charge?

How much of the base set (1-101) did you achieve?

Not sure when, but I'll probably get a few more boxes.

    Thanx for sharing.

Shop had them for $130. I don’t mind paying a little more to support the local brick and mortar.

I didn’t count the base set cards (and filed away the cards I’m keeping already) but I’d say I got about half the base set.

I've got one about 5 miles Dan.

Was thinking I should go more.

Unfortunately according to a buddy, he's been burglarized not once but twice recently.

Ripped another box - total of 12 packs.

Am getting close to finishing the base set - not even gonna try to do the SP extended set since ya only get ONE (1) card in the box of 12 packs!

    The auto pulls weren't bad.
