1977-79 Sportcaster card

I have been wanting to buy a Joe Louis 1977-79 Sportcaster card for sometime. Does anyone know which ones are the rarest ones. I know there are Italian versions as well as Japan versions, but which ones are the rarest, and hardest to find?

With this scandal going on, it doesn't take long for this thread to sink to the bottom of the page! Therefore, 3,2,1, liftoff!⬆

First, educate yourself on the drastic difference between North American-Italy, vs Italian.

There are many threads here about the relative scarcity difference between versions from various nations. Some step up exponentially and some are small gaps from each other.

In order of value and scarcity:

    Dutch
    Belgian
    German
    Italian
    French
    North American-Japan
    Swedish
    UK
    Finnish
    North American-Italy

Italian is a big step up from French, and not as far off from German.

So for example, for graded copies you might expect to pay retail of $15 or so for North American-Italy vs. $1,200 for Dutch.

So I take it that a dutch version would be the holy grail of sportscaster cards? This can be a little tricky. I feel like I'm studying for an SAT. I must admit, it is fascinating stuff.

Ok, I 've done some research on this, and it looks like I am in for another White Whale hunt. This dutch Joe Louis is going to be next to impossible to find. The pop report only shows one. Thanks to everybody who responded to this thread for your help. You have helped me tremendously.

Jeez guys, you really need to ask for these things sooner ;)
Here again, Ron bought both of the two different Dutch Sportscaster Joe Louis cards from me before I knew anyone else was interested. Let me know about others you might be looking for. I am pretty good at tracking down rare sportscasters.

    well that sucks lol :D

It took long enough to get UK (13-064) vs US (03-005) recognized as being different, don't expect print run to be recognized any time soon (even though there are actual variations in text on at least some).

I only collect the golfers, but have noted about a dozen variations other than just the print run code.

I just noticed that the Swedish version of the Terry Bradshaw Sportscaster was added to the master set checklist. So now I'm in search of one :) Anyone have any good source for these?

Is it possible the Japan releases were only available in the 'Sample Packs' of three cards? I just picked one up recently and all 3 cards were from different decks and all Japan printings. I'm not sure if these were bulked out to every household or if you had to call/mail a request to receive them.

I guess the first 7 decks could have been available as complete w/Japan variation based on the pop report, but the random deck 10 Comaneci Japan with no others from decks 8/9/10 is confusing. I'm really hoping the 47-16 Trio Grande Japan is just a Mech Error.

I haven't been convinced that there is actually a Dutch set and a Belgian set. The Belgian cards have been documented as
having the 0086-1030. Whenever I've seen a Dutch card for sale it has the same code. One of the official languages of Belgium is Dutch - the others are French and German. Until I hear otherwise, I think it is one set printed in Dutch. Until someone can confirm another country code, I won't believe it. FYI - I would love to be wrong on this.

  • runccruncc Posts: 11 ✭✭

Here are the country codes for the different sets.

USA / N.A. 03-005 - some printed in Japan; others in Italy
    UK 13-064
    France 16-265
    Sweden 47-021
Finland one number system with no country code
    Germany 17-033
    Italy 833
    Belgium 0086-1030

If you find an odd country code, like 993, those are promotional cards. Lots of Hank Aaron cards can be found with this code.

I have at least one card from each of these sets above. I even looked up some of the words on the Belgian cards to confirm that the language is Dutch.

The cards offered in the different sets varied. For example, there are some track runners in some of the sets that are not in the USA set. I found that out since I am collecting the track and field cards.

The owner of this card confirmed it is not a Japan printing.

RAS is the only one with one listed on the Player Set registry and you can contact him through there, not sure what his real name is though. Otherwise, Gator may be building the set on the sly.

  • Today I noticed that PSA has a new feature. In the my membership section there is now a customer request center. When you go there a button called research request comes up. Click it and the description talks about how if you want to get variations recognized. Wondering if this is something that we could use to get the sportscaster variations recognized. I hate how the genenva A vs B vs Lausanne are not recognized
