Have you got any "Oddball" grading company cards to share or a company you don't usually buy from?

Stone193Stone193 Posts: 24,420 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hi everyone

Am reorganizing my graded cards and came across a bunch that have been given to me over the years from a member who used to post here.

Some I just picked up myself out of curiosity.

E.g. the Gem graded Griffey. I was hoping it would be a fake but only trimmed - paid 8 bucks for the card - and it's a good example of what the edge of a "trimmed" card looks like.

The Arrowhead Holder from ASA was given to me at the '92 National by Alan Hager and the PSA sample holder was given to me by Mike Baker who used to work for PSA many years ago.

The SCD Authentic was sent to subscribers when they were attempting to jump into the world of TPGs.

I always got a kick out of the BCCG - has a 9 but says "Near Mint or Better"

I have very few GAI holders - the Gwynn was picked up a the Houston TriStar for 5 bucks.

The PGC and IKON grading service - from a friend - maybe I was supposed to pass them on to someone else?

The SGC was purchased - of all places - Coach's Corner for 67 bucks.

So, please post other incredible holders for the archives.

A long time ago I made the mistake of buying a few items graded by PRO, PCG, TFA, and USA, among others. Of the four I mentioned, I feel like USA was the closest to being legit.

SCD was a good grading company in it's very short life. If there was a card I wanted at a decent price I would have no issues with buying from them.

I love SGC and have used them in the past but the others you posted, I would probably not waste my money.

I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 2700 PSA graded cards, and perhaps less than 50 total in holders from the other TPGs. Here is one example of each of the oddballs.

There was a period of time when I was heavy into 1975s, and over the course of buying various lots and partial/complete sets, I ended up with quite a few random SGC and BVG graded cards from that year. Here are just 2 examples of those.

Also, I have a handful of BCCG that have made their way to me, usually being included as part of other purchases. This is my highest graded one from them. Most of my others are in 9 holders, but as noted, that's only regarded as Near Mint or Better.

The 2 Carews came as part of a larger purchase of graded Carews. I was working on some vintage raw sets, and the 68, 70, and 75 were in oddball holders also, but they all looked pretty good for the price (especially when compared to raw Greg Morris offerings of the same cards), so I bought the whole lot and cracked out the ones I needed for my sets. I don't recall now which oddball grading companies those were. They could have been the same as these, or some other unique TPG. The holder for the 81 was cracked in transit, but I already have a whole handful of raw Carews that are better than that card, so just set this one aside and forgot about it until this thread.

Has anyone heard if KSA? Aren't they supposed to be canada's version of PSA?

    Thanx for the input guys.

Just found this company while searching for Quaker Babe Ruth items.

    AAA Grading Co

If anyone was curious to what they're calling a "card?"

It's one of the pages of the Flip card premium from Quaker:

I think it's cool that they even gave it a "card #"

I don't have a pic of it anymore, but many many years ago (I want to say 10ish) I bought a 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson in a PRO case. Bad move. Trimmed. Learned my lesson.

I haven't priced an 82 Henderson in awhile, but I got both of my PSA 9s several years ago for under $10 each. Unless you think it's a no doubter to cross over to a 10, you'd probably be better off saving your money and buying a 9 already graded.

about 15 or so years ago I received a 1973 topps mini Mike Schmidt rookie in a PRO mint 9 holder. It didnt hang around too long.

    Hiya Donovan

Correct on the ASA grading company.

Alan Hager was the inventor/patent holder for the holder - he also copyrighted the 10 point grading system at one point - I believe - and PSA used these attributes.

Bought this card raw, for $10, at a card show in 92. Many moons later, I sent it to SGC because I liked the look of their slabs. It's one of my favorite pieces in my collection featuring an early example of Mr Smith's autograph.

Some sort of tabs to hold the corners in place, I believe. I'll be bashing it open in the near future to determine for sure.

I don't get the point of BCCG grading. Why not just get the "real" BGS or BVG grading from Beckett and be done with it?

I remember in BGS' early days they were MUCH tougher on their grading than PSA...is that still true now?

And remember how I mentioned several years ago how if we call a card's condition "grading" or "graded", it would make sense to do school letter grades instead of the same ol' 1-10 everyone does? It would work thusly:

    A+ Pristine
    A Gem Mint
    A- Mint
    B+ Near Mint-Mint
    B Near Mint
    B- Excellent Mint
    C+ Excellent
    C Very Good-Excellent
    C - Very Good
    D+ Good
    D Fair
    D- Poor
F -- Card itself is authentic, but has been "compromised" in someway (trimmed, recolored borders, etc)...maybe PSA could offer to slab a card like this (with the label boldy saying trimmed or whatever) for the sake of authenticity conformation and grade it a "PSA 0".

My favorite from the list above is CTA. Loved their holders and gold and silver labels for 9s and 10s. There was an inner sleeve as well so the card didn't move. I thought they did a good job.

Before Beckett graded Star cards I sent 3 Jordan’s to CSA. At the time a very reputable Canadian company. Not sure if they even exist today but the holders have a foam insert and are extremely colorful. I’ll post later. Would they garner full Beckett value if sold?
