I’ve always wondered if the Re-Engraved (Double Outline) Obverse Stars on this 1873-S (Closed 3) $20 Gold Liberty (Type 2) Double Eagle constitute some type of special Variety or better yet some type of Doubled Die.

@Stuart, this is often called Longacre doubling. I have seen this on double eagles especially around the obverse stars, though it is more common on indian head cents. A "halo" effect is created on all sides of the design element.

Look in From Mine to Mint for details and illustrations, including the reverse of 2 1904 DE - one showing the effect and the other with the logo punch shoulder not visible.
