Yankees or Celtics

stwainfanstwainfan Posts: 1,517 ✭✭✭✭✭

Both have the most championship in their sports. Some of the best players have played for one of these teams. Who's had the better history? Between these historic teams.

Great question about excellent organizations/teams. I highly recommend reading The Captain Class (The Hidden Force That Creates the World's Greatest Teams) by Sam Walker.

I vote for the Celtics because the Yankees great success has always been driven by unfair advantage. Once they got Babe Ruth they were able to parlay his fame into signing whoever they wanted up through the 60s. Once free agency started they were able to buy more championships via their local TV money advantages. The one period (1965-1975) pre free agency where the draft forced them to function on a level playing field they were awful.

If I had to choose between the Yankees or Celtics, I would take the Canadians.

I would have to say, New York, because they had Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, some of the biggest Icons in sports, and the hobby. Plus an 18 wheeler full of championships.

Of course whenever I think about the Celtics, I am immediately reminded of the day our Bassett Hound accidentally stumbled upon my favorite Larry Bird card. She brought it to me in her mouth. I was horrified. I can still see the slobber dripping into the top loader and smearing on Larry Bird's face. I still wake up in a cold sweat from time to time because of this.

Celtics with Bill Russell was a great championship run. They won more with Bird and that team.

Auerbach had an amazing knack for getting players. He swung a deal for Russell when he should have gone to another team. He lucked into Cousy even after not drafting him.

The Yankees’ dynasty began before the great Celtics’ players were born. This is not a close issue.

Let's not forget that Dave Kingman average 1 home run every 6 at bats in a Yankee uniform. A slugging percentage of .833! This is the third highest slugging percentage of all time. Only Barry Bonds in 2001 when he hit 73 home runs and Babe Ruth in 1920 and 21 when he averaged .377 and 56 home runs was higher.

It is a travesty that Dave Kingman does not have a monument at Yankee stadium right next to Babe and Lou.

To slip back for a moment to the original question, "Who's had the better history? Between these historic teams."

The answer is not even close; the New York Yankees by far have the better history between these historic teams.

By the way, I am not in the "everyone" camp because I love the Yankees!!!

I salute the chap who mentioned the Montreal Canadiens, though, even if he failed to spell their name correctly. Mention should be made of the great Big Bad Bruins of '67 - '72. A short dynasty to be sure, but one their many fans will never forget. Yet - yet - yet....Canadiens' fans delight to remind them that in their zenith, the mighty red, white, and blue dismantled the Bruins in the 1971 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The HEAVILY-FAVORED Big Bad were sent away "to shovel shit in Louisiana" (a nod to a line from George C. Scott as General George Patton in the brilliant movie, "Patton", that was capturing the imagination of the American public at that moment). Somehow, the Bruins cleaned themselves up, and lived to fight another day, and win the Stanley Cup again in 1972. Naturally, it helped that "Le Gros Bill", Captain Jean Beliveau, retired after a brilliant career in Montreal following their Stanley Cup victory in 1971. Then, the World Hockey Association came to life, and the NHL would not be the same for several years.

Anyway, hockey was not supposed to be part of the discussion, was it? I guess it was more fun to write about at the moment. Be that as it may, love 'em or hate 'em, the New York Yankees rule MLB history. There's many other great teams and great players, but the Yankees have the greatest history, bar none.

Have a nice weekend, gentleman. Hope you don't have occasion to shed salty tears.

    --- Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)

PS--- If you happen to enjoy post-war regional / food issues, I have written a 478-page E-book on a CD, entitled "Never Cheaper By the Dozen". It's filled with information and priceless stories about these interesting cards and coins. It has about 32 mostly color photos. Available from the author. Contact him at bfpowell2003@yahoo.com. Or, if you prefer the digital download, it's on Amazon. No, it will never be available in traditional paper form, so if you only have a mind for paper, you're "out to lunch". Last I looked, the press release from SCD's former editor, Tom Bartsch, is still on the web. Google the title, and look for an entry from Sports Collectors Digest. Ciao, for now. -- Brian
