I got the below message which makes no sense if you read it. Basically, it says (1st paragraph) that I submitted a sales tax permit but I need to submit a sales tax permit (2nd paragraph). WTF???

I called ebay and the first rep was incompetent and the tax division out to lunch.

After a few curse words, I hung up in disgust.

I love ebay but they have the worst customer service reps on the planet.

Regarding the Status of your Sales Tax Exemption Request - SR# 1-212056143676

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for sending in your tax related documentation for California.

We have reviewed the documentation sent in, and the document is a sales tax permit. A sales tax permit grants authorization to collect tax as a seller. You are now authorized to collect sales tax in California on your eBay listings.

If you would like the purchases on the account to be exempt from tax as a buyer, different documentation is needed. For California, that document is the Sales Tax Permit. If you do not have this document, please consult your state’s Department of Revenue for what would be required for requesting the exemption.

To submit a tax exemption certificate, please see this page:

https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/paying-items/paying-tax-ebay-purchases?id=4771&st=2&pos=2&query=Paying tax on eBay purchases&intent=tax#section1

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Regards,

eBay Customer Service

They don't want the state issued permit. They want the blanket certificate you give to sellers. Might be this form.

Could be, but how do I know which "vendors" that I will use in the future.

Does each vendor need a separate piece of paper?

jm, your link is a California resale certificate.

They say I need a "Sales Tax Permit" which they say that I already submitted?

The resale permit is for purchases, you are set for the collecting sales tax in CA.

They make sense to me, if you are not requesting exemption from paying sales tax in CA, then you are set.

NO THEY WANT THE CALIFORNIA RESALE CERTIFICATE.

It is called different things in different states, hence the somewhat ambiguous response.

    Trust me, I did it.

Possibly if they charge it separately. I don't know what happens when the state passes its internet tax since NY hasn't done it yet. I assume eBay will start collecting all NY State Sales taxes.

eBay told me to use the following information for the "seller":

    eBay Inc.

I get being frustrated, but it really never hurts to be nice. I've found eBay customer service to be top notch. I don't always get what I want, but they tend to do a really good job when they can, and even when I'm arguing something, I've found them polite and engaged. Maybe it helps that I don't curse them out. It certainly doesn't hurt.

I did not call the person a curse word nor curse at the person, but at the system, something like " this so of effing frustrating"

I mean eBay is a California based company, you would think that they would get the terminology right in the email. Super confusing.

Well, I wasn't sure which form to send them originally. I sent the resale certificate and they told me that was the wrong one, so I knew it was the blanket reseller certificate (NY). Frankly, that made more sense as that is the form you are supposed to supply to sellers.

  • ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes, thanks again, it makes more sense to send the signed form. I just sent them both the form and sellers permit.

The email should have stated what the correct form they need is and provide a link. I think I am not the only one in California on ebay with a resale certificate.

Is the permit in your eBay name?
Or in your business name which maybe different
If the name is different that is a problem!

I encounter that problem in California also.
The problem was Pat and BJ Coins

I get EOC's frustration with the offshore customer service team and agree with Jeremy that cursing is of no benefit.

In the earliest days of Ebay there was no phone contact, only Email. 2004 or so my volume warranted a dedicated US based customer service rep. Had a couple and they were professional, knowledgeable and truly wanted to see my business expand.

That all ended several years ago and now you land in a phone center twelve hours away with friendly but not well trained reps that have difficulty with the growing complexities of the Ebay system.

Maybe the PNG and CDN sellers have a better connection. The rest of us don't

You have to send in a resale certificate and be registered retailer. One form is able to “sell & collect” other is exempt for tax. eBay says you can file state tax form and get it back but hmmm.

ebay has gotten too big for it's own good. Coin and stamp sales are 19th on the revenue list? Face it, ebay has not and is not about to put any vigor into keeping sellers of coins and stamps happy.

Their business model is terrible for this category and it shows. One way it shows is their deficiency of providing good customer service for sellers. Don't look for ebay customer service for coin and stamp sellers to improve. Sellers of these items are a distant 19th on their list of customer service priorities.

Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

    Unbelievable

When I had to set up collection of Texas sales tax on coin purchases (non taxable now do have not had to do that) it simply was a button in seller preferences and it went smoothly. Of course that occasional stupido that was surprised have sales tax added to his purchase lol. It’s funny how new world systems nerf things that are good and work smoothly. I am still ticked how I am forced use the updated shipx label printing process.

Understand that if coin purchases taxable in your state the dealer is responsible for collecting, filing, paying. It should not be a surprise if tax added to your purchase.
