A friend shared this with me. His reserach found this to be a 50 gram slice of a gold bar issue from the Mexican mint. Anybody have any other history ?? I was also wondering if anybody would grade/slab such a piece.

That looks neat. What are the dimensions?

Instead of ingot/bar pieces these 50 g slivers are used to ensure a melt is at the correct weight?

    Or,

Perhaps a cross-section slice to ensure the ingot was solid gold throughout?

But the inside was tungsten, a heavy metal that is a lot cheaper but with similar atomic weight to gold.

Yes, that was the point I was making, it’s a pretty good counterfeit. Outer layer is a thick layer of real gold but the center is not. About the only way to tell is by cutting it open or drilling to get a core sample.

Perhaps that was the purpose for the OP’s slice of a gold bar.

I held it in my hand this morning, its not thick, not much thicker than a silver dollar and weighs a lot. Had copper spotting very typical for gold mix. But, any thing can be counterfeited.
