Imagine what those will go for. The Georgia has been off the charts in 67 (although prices are coming down heavily)

Does anybody have any guesses on what these will bring. It would be interesting to compare to the final numbers. Personally, I have no idea, as I am always confused about which States are the tough ones!

Is that haze I see on the obverse of the Connecticut?

  • Should be interesting! I was offered a PA-P by a board member. I won't say the price he offered it for, but it exceeded my budget at the time (a few weeks ago). It will be interesting to see how this compares. I'll throw out some wild guesses:

    GA-P: $4500
    PA-P: $1,500
    CT-P: $2,500

On this subject, the online pop report issued today shows the following pops for ms69 state quarters:

    CT-P 1 (new this week), NY-P 2, NC-P 1, VT-P 1 (was 2 last week), VT-D 2 (both new this week), KY-P 1 (new this week).

Maybe some of these new ones will disappear next week!!!!! image

I really thought I had an excellent shot of winning the coin with my bid of $5250. Geez, Pete Tompkins told me it would only cost $4500 and he was pretty darn close on the other coins!! image

I just wonder how high the GA would have gone if I had bid higher. This mysterious winner of the GA obviously wanted it very badly image Wondercoin.

  • Mitch,

With only 5 feedbacks...you may still get it....

  • Wonder if that Georgia will end up in the regestry. That was a lot of money. I can't wait until the pop goes to 2. Will be interesting to see.

  • Just looked, on top of only having 7 feedbacks the winner has not bought anything in 9 months. That is one big way to jump back into the game.

  • Mitch;
Actually, I missed all three by almost exactly the same (percentage) amount---16-17%. The other two don't surprise me a whole lot, but the GA is a little surprising---some one wanted it VERY much!!

  • Give it 10 years and you will see these coins in ms68 for under $100 and
    ms69 for around $300

The 01-S quarter is rare. State quarters are not. Do you really think they will find many more high grade 01-S quarters?

If the rarest moderns will go for $100., then not only will the hobby not have grown
sufficiently, but a mass exodus must surely have occurred. No, large numbers of 1901-S quar-
ters are not going to appear except at auctions and sales. I should be able to pick
up a nice circulated piece for a most nominal price.

Right now: How many collectors are actively seeking a 1901-S Barber quarter? Now, how many collectors are seeking these State quarters in top grade? See, it isn't always how many of something are out there (admittingly LOW on the Barber) but how many want it TODAY that sets the price.
And, last time I checked, that 01-S wasn't a cheap coin regardless.

I take nothing away from the 01-S. In fact, in grades VG08 to VF20 they are almost impossible to locate and I'd love to own one!
    But, the market is thin.
Not so for the State Quarters in Top Grade.
Debate how you see fit on how long this trend will last, but for TODAY, there are simply more collectors driven to locate these Top Grade State quarters than the Barber quarter.

    Braddick:

Good analysis. But, that is also called a bubble by some. I believe that these ultra modern, ultra high grade pieces will come crashing down in price. When they do, it will be for exactly the same reasons that you cited for the tremendous high prices today. Nothing unique here about coins. Look at Linux stock. It was issued at $30 and on the same day it traded over $320. Now it trades at 91c. Management obviously thought the stock was worth about $30, maybe a little more when they came to market. Yet investors were paying $320 within an hour. Why?, for the same reasons you cite. Yes, supply and demand are the only reason coin prices are where they are. But, if the past is any guide, supply and demand can change quickly and dramatically.

You are assuming collectors of Barber Quarters collect moderns. Nothing leads to that conclusion at this time.

Greg- You get no argument from me. I'm staying away from the "RightSide Pop" State quarters. Do I know more about these then those who wish not to follow that advice? Certainly not, it is just my comfort level doesn't allow me to spend hundreds on these (or thousands) and sleep soundly at night.

Greg, my best friend made $40,000 on that stock. Since I do not know how these things work, I do know that that stock opened at right about $300 when it went live. Not sure how many got in on the $30 rate (it was supposed to be $14, but they raised it right before it went public). (we are talking about VA Systems: LNUX right?) This was nothing like what he made on the stock from the company he worked for (with pennies per share investment), but still quite a bit for basically no investment (he had to buy the stock after he sold it basically).
