Looking Forward To 2020 Heritage-- Questions?

Hey All--

Being a huge fan of the 1971 design like many, I am already anxiously awaiting Heritage 2020 (having finished up my 2019 doesn't help!)

In any event, I am thinking for the first time next year to buy a case and start the set off with a bang. Usually I buy strictly retail as I am always in Target for something. With that being the case:

  1. Who are generally good priced sources of the cases?
  2. Typically when do you put in pre-orders?
  3. How close to completing a Master set (with the basic inserts) can you typically come with a case?

Obviously some of these answers may change, but having never dived into these waters, I'd be curious to know. Until then, my purchase of "new" cards is complete for the year as Heritage is the only modern issue I purchase.

Matt

Dave and Adam's is a good source. I have a couple pre-orders with them now and they were the cheapest. They also guarantee if their price drops before release to credit the difference to you.

I think several years ago I was whining about "I can't wait that long!" for the 1971 Heritage. Can't believe it's already almost here...and in 4-5 more short years the iconic 1975 and 1976 ones.

I think I've tried a couple of times to start that 1971 set but (for whatever reasons) I had to sell back the PSA 7's I had. Then again I don't even have the 1974 and 1973 done yet....sigh I'll never get to do that 1971 set :(

    I can't wait. I'm pretty sure I'll be pre-ordering a case.

@estil - I'm working on the 71T set. I'm aiming for 8 or better. I'll likely make a few exceptions for a few of the higher dollar cards just for budget reasons. I'm guessing I have another 3 or 4 years to go since I split my purchases between that and a few modern sets I collect every year.

Next year, 2024, 2027, and 2029 will be epic for me. This issue will stand the test of time. The 50’s and 60’s guys dropping out will undoubtedly be replaced and then some with 70’s and 80’s guys.

Can someone here give a summary of the different types of heritage packs for sale and what are the card differences in those packs?

As far as I can tell, and I'm a rookie, there are:

    Hobby cases/boxes
    ?retail cases/boxes
    hanger box
    blaster box
    ?cello cases/boxes
    ?jumbo?
    ?Wal-mart
    ?Target

And I'm assuming within these various boxes they do each series? Is there two series and then the update?

    thanks

    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
    Prefer to buy in bulk.

I'll be going all in for the 1972 design. As for when I will stop, I always said the 1973 design would end it for me, but I know I will want the 1975 design, so I will suffer through the 1974 design and probably stop after the 1975 design (maybe).

Have a question to the Heritage faithful as I haven't had the itch. How would you explain the large appeal for you guys? The cards definitely look awesome, that part of I get!! But, I have generally been turned off on ALL modern due to the "insert this and insert that, refractor gold, orange, pink and blue, signed bat, signed father/son", the variations seem to be endless. It seems like an expensive chase...….

No judgement intended here, but perhaps I will get enlightened and get the fever!

I can only speak for myself, but Heritage isn't about "hits" for me. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to get them, but it's about opening packs and set building, Since I don't like the shiny main Topps issue each year I like to think that Heritage is the Topps of my time. Like how it was for the generation before me going to the candy/grocery store and buying packs just to make that years set.

Agreed with Nam. Heritage has always been a throwback to the pre 90's collector for me. Ripping packs and building sets. Except Heritage took it a step further with the inserts that make building the master set that much more interesting. It doesnt stop at ripping packs. There is a large community of collectors who trade and sell. It's a seasonal madness that can't be described unless you try it for yourself.

In the end the set looks beautiful laid out in an album. Quite honestly the Heritage "hits" also tend to sell for more than most hits from other products. Which is just a bonus to the set building.

I have been looking forward to the 1971 design (2020 Heritage) since I started ripping Heritage in 2008.

Topps' design strategy was just a great way to connect with the "current production" market and put a set together.

The trading and topic discussions back around 2004, e.g., was epic.

The fun of doing the set usually lasts for about 2 months. For me, definitely bang for buck.

Heritage is a marketing & product grand slam for Topps. They are guaranteed aging loyalty for simply repeating history with modern flair. For every I’m done dude there will be three more picking it up as we move further into the 70’s. They got aging 50’s guys in the early 2000’s. They got aging 60’s guys in the 2010’s. Now they get aging 70’s guys in the 2020’s. And so on...

I echo the above. It’s a lot of fun to buy packs and build a set especially with trading. It’s a product I can actually buy and get the “old school rush” of pulling a card I need for my set. It scratches the set building itch and brings back fond memories I have of collecting classic cards with my grandparents. For me, as we hit the 71 design and forward, I’m in heaven.

All told it’s not like most modern product where you chase box hits and trash tbe balance of the box. With Heritage, you pull short prints for your set and challenging, yet very attainable insert sets that are fun to collect. In my view, you get your monies worth right there. Pulling an autograph is an added bonus. Value for tbe buck is high in Heritage for me.

I'm not a Heritage collector, but I'm curious to hear from those who are...once Heritage gets into the 80's, do you think it stops? I ask because if you like the design of 1962 Topps, for instance, the cost of ripping those packs is astronomical. Whereas ripping Heritage packs of that design are budget friendly. That said, it is incredibly budget friendly to still rip packs from almost every year in the 80's, save maybe 1980. I understand that some of the attraction is obtaining cards of current players in the old design, but I was just wondering if people think that there is some sort of natural end. I for one can't imagine wanting to buy Heritage product of modern guys in, say, the 1996 Topps design. (if it ever gets to that point)

We've already seen Topps use 80s designs for archives, 35th anniversary, minis and die cuts, etc., so I could see them going through that decade with it. I would imagine that 1991 and the end of gray cardboard stock would be a natural end for Heritage, if not before, or possibly starting it all over again with the 1952 design in 2041.

Never purchased heritage before - and I am a 1971 set builder (60 more to go ....)
How much would a case be approximately? and when would someone need to pre-order a case?

Don't forget the edge chipping. On the black border parallels I have pulled, some of the edges looked rough.

Heritage quality for me this year has been great. Not many overly OC although it seems that Chromes were more susceptible to OC. I don’t collect the Chromes anymore so didn’t impact me.
