Paperboy like many others starting in '69 at age 10. I would cherry pick the silver coins and wheat pennies and War Nickels. I received the 1970 Red Book for Christmas (which I still have and use) and the first coin show I went to, I decided enough with the worn stuff and spent my paper route money on a BU '55 Franklin Half for $5. It was the pride of my collection and I show it to all my friends with their grubby mitts. It was about a VF when all my silver sold in '80, so I did fine, but a good lesson.
Funny that this thread got me thinking about my parents and my very early collecting...which I had not thought about much since their untimely passing more than 15 years ago.
At or around the same time my dad surprised me with the 40% silver bicentennial set, he also bought me a clear lucite paperweight with the Philadelphia portion of a 1964 Mint set embedded within.
That paperweight faithfully sat on my nightstand through grade school, high school and college...the first thing I saw every morning when I turned on my lamp...until I left it behind when I got married. Unfortunately it got lost in the shuffle when I had to clean out my parents house.
But it’s funny how these random thoughts suddenly dawn on you after decades of being lost in the mists of time.

@RichRRichR Wow! when you take coins, are you feeling good?
Lincoln cent. Was introduced to me as a child. I wasn't able to stop until I completed a full set of business strikes.
