1972 penny - what would cause it to look like this?

I'm trying to figure out how to describe the penny to see if it's worth anything

@marcus1 Welcome to the forums. The cent appears to have environmental damage, example, was buried in the ground. No added value and worth face... 1c.

Edit to add: Ground and fire = lava. LOL :p
