new collector thoughts and questions
Graded cards fetch the highest premium typically, unless it’s a high profile raw card (mantle, ryan/bench rookies, etc)
Seems as though grading cards has become the norm now for almost anything collectible - memorabilia, etc
The price differences between mint 9 and GM MT 10 is only going to get wider;
I would also compare vintage raw cards to anything unopened - in the sense that there are only so many raw cards that are in decent shape in the open market that are worth grading, and MOST, it seems are not going to be worth grading if it’s not a “10.”
My guess is that sooner or later vintage common cards that have a shot at 9-10 are going to be bought at a much higher price than they normally would. All depending on age. There’s going to be a curve - the older the card the higher the price, etc.
All very good for the hobby as newer cards start getting labeled as “vintage,” I think will keep the hobby as strong as it is.
Anybody else care to share thoughts? Did I miss something? Do I need to be corrected on something? Thanks!

You have a good point. I know of several vintage eBay sellers who seem to get strong prices for raw cards. I'm surprised to see some of these cards bring more $ than an equivalent condition card in a PSA case.
My guess is that to bring these types of cards to market these sellers are cracking them out of existing TPG cases. Probably a lot of Becket and SGC cases? Just my guess as it's no longer the norm to have nice cards in an ungraded state.
just like unopened wax, money to be had with speculation, people are willing to take chances.

I agree;
I’ve bought a lot of cards from Greg Morris cards lately, and most commons that he has as NM - MT OR BETTER go for less than 5$ a card (See: 1972 Topps Baseball). Why NOT take the a chance and go for a GM MT 10?
I can’t help but think someday there is going to be a craze over obtaining a GM MT 10 vintage card!!
Congrats on your purchases from Greg Morris regarding your low purchase prices. Looks like you used some savvyness to pick out the good deals. I usually win 10% or less of the auctions that I bid on from Greg Morris, and I bid aggressively.
If you only have a little bit of money tied into the card, and you don't need it back right away, then subbing in hopes of getting a high grade for a profit is a good risk to take.
Good luck with your subs!

Thank you! I’m a bargain hunter by trade regardless, so I was thrilled to get the cards that I have from his eBay store. I’ve spent a good lot there; I’m gonna keep most, maybe return a few to re invest. But hey, I buy one of the .79 cent NM-MN OR BETTER cards, spend 20$ (or 8$, if I go bulk sub) and pull off a 10, great! Even if it came back a 9 or an 8 even, chances are I’d still make a little/break even on it. I bought one card though for $200 I’m planning on subbing soon, but a bit nervous. More on that later 🙂

Might be a good idea to post a scan on this board and have the board members chime in to see what they think it would grade. It depends on many factors, including price for the grade. These days, as you mentioned above, prices seem to skyrocket as the grade increases toward 10.

Yeah I know; I know it probably won’t get a 10; but I think it’s an absolute 9 for sure. I hesitate to share though bc I don’t want my bubble to pop completely! 😂😂
And I have the paranoia that psa graders watch the forums and may grade it before getting it. Then again I know next to nothing about grading other then the hours I’ve spent studying graded cards, what to look for, etc. I guess I just hesitant to post it overall, I dunno. My fears unfounded?

Don't know if you were around when the "registry" started?
It's driven commons to insane heights!
I've made many purchases in the early 90s on raw cards that I sent in via club membership that have rewarded me.
Since I never sell? It's more of a "pride of ownership" type of thing.
If you have any small shows near you or have the opportunity to attend the "national?" That might be a good place for you to 'hunt' for those diamonds in the rough - if ya know what I mean?
I spent over an hour last night going thru an 800 count box of all kinds of cards and found 2 that looked good. If I submit? I'll let you know how it goes?
Anyway - happy hunting buddy.
Hey Mike!
I don’t really have any card shows close to me I don’t think, so I just browse the Greg Morris listings for something I think might be a bargain. I just got back into collecting in February, and almost every google search for a particular question brought me straight to these forums, where I learned about grading and what it was and so forth! My wife unfortunately, is hating me for it LOL. I’m trying to convince her to let me get the 250$ membership for more submissions, but she thinks I’m pretty much full of it. 🤷♂️
They never get it.
I don't understand. A graded Mantle or Ryan/Bench rookie will sell for a lot more than a raw version. If you're saying a raw 1968 Mantle will sell for a higher price than a PSA 8 1968 Al Weis, I'd agree. Still, the raw Weis would likely have a higher value compared to a similar graded Weis than the Mantle would simply because there is much less benefit to forge or alter the Weis. If either the Weis or the Mantle is in a PSA slab, you'd have strong reason to believe that it is authentic and unaltered. Raw is about the same with the Weis, but not nearly as good chances with the Mantle.
That’s what I meant; sorry I wasn’t more clear!
My wife has her own hobby so I get absolutely ZERO flack for what I do.

Here is my philosophy. The card is the painting. The PSA case is the frame.🖼
Awesome!
Oooh, well said!
