Modern Hockey

Hello,
Got back into collecting last year and started buying mostly vintage baseball. Looking to add some modern hockey, mostly guys from last years draft like Brady Tkachuk. Is there one brand or card considered to be the main rookie to have? Just searched eBay for Tkachuk rookies and there are so many out there to pick from and I have no clue what I’m doing. Any help would be appreciated. Also, where is the best place to buy unopened and what boxes are most desirable? I want to get into hockey buying as it’s the sport I follow the most closely.
Thanks,
Mark

Upper Deck The Cup has been leading the pack on RCs, especially for the current crop of stars. Just look at the Crosby, Kane, McDavid and Matthews patch autos on EBay. Their boxes are ridiculously priced high, as folks are chasing these particular RCs.
The upper deck "Young guns" subset are extremely popular every year. They offer quality design and affordability. I personally collect these and the SP Authentic Future Watch auto rookie cards.
Love the hockey. Great answers above, young guns and the cup are the RC's to have.

Generally the young guns is he RC picked to be on the PS set registry

Affordable: Upper Deck Young Guns, higher end: The Cup, in the middle: SP Authentic Future Watch. It all depends on how much you want to spend but you really can't wrong with any of them.
I am far from a hockey collector, but I believe these three sound right. I think you can also consider Exquisite for another mid/high option as well as OPC Premier or Platinum for very low cost options.

I like Panini National Treasures RCs and RPAs but they haven’t produced hockey since 2013/14, as I think their licence expired. Too bad as their patches were larger than The Cup and their simple designs were more attractive.
The thread title reminds me of a story not sure I’ve shared yet
The Mrs and I found ourselves in a small town with time to kill when I stumbled into a LCS. I went in to browse, and knowing we wanted to get some gifts for some hockey enthusiastic friends, my bride asked the proprietor if there were any hockey cards we could take a look at.
“Modern hockey or vintage hockey?” She was asked.
“Ice hockey!” She enthusiastically answered.
Ahhhh .... married for love ....
