Mystery Miscut

I'm new at this and am hoping someone can please provide some advice on why PSA would have deemed this card a miscut, a '68 Topps Super Stars card (#490) featuring Harmon Killebrew, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. I have more cards to send in for grading but need to first understand this. My understanding is that the "miscut" designation typically applies to cards with partial images from what should be two different cards, but that doesn't apply here, and the card is the same size as other '68 cards. Thanks for any guidance ...

    My take?

I submitted this card and it came back miscut.

I checked it and it had a very slight "diamond cut" - i.e. to say, the card is slightly out of square (not 90 degrees) - above is an exaggeration of the diamond cut (for comparison, a "tilt" is where the card is square but the inset portion is tilted or not parallel with the outer border)

    I resubmitted the card - here's the 2 results:

    edit: I scanned the card:

@galanwarner I don't collect cards but I'm willing to hazard a guess: the left margin is not the same width as the right margin on the face of the card. Similarly, the top and bottom margins are not equal width either. Thus, on the reverse of your card, the left and right margins are grossly unequal in width.

Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]

There two kinds of miscuts. The kind you are referring to (part of two cards on one card) is one kind. The other kind involves a card that isn't cut square. The card, as opposed to the image, is diamond shaped and the corners are not cut at 90 degrees. Those are also called miscuts. PSA will not grade those types of miscuts.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. After looking at the comments, I confirmed that the corners of the card are at 90 degrees, so I can only assume it's being called a miscut since the image is slightly angled, but the image is not any more slanted than that of other cards that came back with grades. I'm not disputing it being called a miscut; I just need a clearer idea of how much slant will deem a card a miscut. I guess the lesson is that if the image has any angle at all, don't send it in, but on the other hand, if you look closely, the same card from Stone193 shown above has a very slight angle to its image as well, and yet it's a 7.

When you refer to a "slant" - that's what I'd call a "Tilt" in the image inside the border of the card.

That is "not" a miscut and will be graded by PSA IMO.

My card - if looked at very closely - is "not" at a right angle (90 degrees) - but off by only maybe a few degrees.

I was only addressing a miscut or diamond cut with respect to the right angle of the corners and as was mentioned - can also be where part of another card or the image area of a card is at the border.

If your card is at 90 degrees? I'd recommend you contact PSA customer support and perhaps resubmit it as a mistake in grading.

Again, mine is off by a bit but on 2nd sub was able to get it graded and put in a holder.

Going by the PSA definition of miscut your card should not have been returned as miscut. I would contact customer service as mentioned before.

For the sake of comparison - an exaggerated Miscut/Diamondcut vs a Tilt

  • Thanks, all; I appreciate the guidance. I followed up with Support and was told each card is checked by at least two appraisers. I'll just set the card aside and try to run it by an expert someday.

Hi - what's your first name?

Did you do this sub as a membership thing?

You can always do what I did. Resub next year. I went from N8 to PSA 7.

    Best of luck buddy.
