This letter provides some of the "flavor" of what Adjusters did at a US Mint (March 1899).

Can you imagine those ladies wearing those long sleeves and heavy dresses in the summer heat of New Orleans?
Roger,
You come up with some of the most outstanding photos, information & documents!
Thank you for your efforts and taking the time to share.
The adjustment rooms had very limited ventilation so that gold dust could not be blown around. There are multiple complaints from the 1870s and later about conditions at Philadelphia. Difficult to imagine the heat and humidity on New Orleans in July or August - and in a closed room.
Interesting weather tidbit for 1899, New Orleans.
“Even the normally sweltering city of New Orleans recorded a sub-freezing temperature of 22° F during its Mardi Gras festivities that year. The city was completely iced over, and revelers had to wait for the snow to be shoveled from parade routes.”
