Question for Canadian Dime people here who submit Dimes to PCGS.

I have had problems in the past with MS coins coming back as PL, which makes them worthless to me. The reason I know they are MS is because they came out of Mint Sets not PL Sets. So my question is do you ever submit them in the cello so they can see that they were MS not PL. Also have you ever submitted the in the ICCS flips so they can see that they are MS.
Thanks in advance for any info.

I always thought everything in a mint set was prooflike at least with 80% silver. Are you saying there are mint sets that are not PL ?
From discussions similar to this on other sites and at other times, it seems that the term "PL" has more than one meaning, thanks to Charlton and ICCS. For some years, the coins were struck with special dies that highlighted the surface luster and depth of design. Once the mint was done striking XX number of coins, the same dies were then used to strike circulation coins. It's the reason why now, I think, that the PL term is not officially used. I am NOT a PCGS PCGS submittor.
Yes, for years I us to get one of each every year.
The answer to your question IMHO is take a quick look at KM. Canada did not issue Mint Sets. If you want a MS dime you need to pluck it from somewhere else besides a Canadian Mint Product.
thats what I thought too.
I don't know about now, but in the 70's, 80's and 90's they made Mint Sets. It said it right on the envelope.
They are classified as "Proof like Sets". A good correlation in US coins are the Satin Finish Coins...both are a different type of minting process than those struck for circulation.
I think they call them PL as Canada started chrome plating their dies in 1945, so the MS silver coins often (maybe usually) have a PL look. I have couple dimes and a quarter in for grading right now; we'll see what happens.
They had PL Sets and they had Mint Sets and they had Proof Sets...all 3 the same year! Believe me.
Dimeman, forget collecting the modern Canadian dimes.
Hopeless cause and never worth anything.
I'm usually more cheerful in my comments, but the Canadian market is comatose and the modern market is beyond dead.

I know what you are saying about Canadian Modern, but I am doing the Canadian Complete Variety Dime Set 1858-Date.
Completeness is everything.

good luck with the 1558 5 / 58 deep pocket are mandatory or getting lucky
Yes, there are several big ticket items. I cherrypicked a 5/5. It's the 8/5 that is the bear.
The "mint sets" in soft plastic and envelopes are Prooflike sets.
There are also Proof sets (aka "Double dollar" sets) and Specimen "Double Penny" sets.
No Canadian coins from those sets are "MS" / Business strikes. Except for some coins in the first year of 1953 "Mint Sets" which weren't standardized. They picked and chose some business strikes to fill in most of the sets.
Are you saying that sets that are labeled "Mint Sets" on the envelope are really PL sets? If that is so.....why do they also have PL Sets? I'm talking back in the 70's and 80's and even 90's. I don't know what they do now. I stopped getting them around 2000. It just doesn't make sense. And I have sent a few of these from Mint Sets that did come back MS.
Prooflike is modern nomenclature to distinguish between the different sets.
All the coins in soft plastic holders like the one below are known as Prooflike sets. Coins from these sets from 1960 and up are all PL coins. If a TPG calls coins from these sets MS, they are mistaken.
I remember those. The ones I an talking about were in a solid white envelope marked "Mint Set" and they sure looked unc to me instead of PL. The clad coins from 68 on of course looked different than the silver coins from previous years.
The silver sets like those above, in yellow/brownish envelopes are also PL.
As are these from 1954 onward, and some 1953 coins in these sets;
I've never had any of those. They have way too many different things. I try to buy these modern Dimes already in PCGS holders when I can, but you don't see them very often. I have a 2005 and 1954 coming now.
I am not sure which white envelope "mint sets" you are speaking about. Perhaps post an image for assistance..
I wish I could do that, but unfortunately I cut out the Dimes and sold the other coins along with the envelopes.
the sets in white or black card board card holder..
the came wrapped in very thin cellophane and most are reasonably valuable.
However, be aware of copied holders filled and wrapped.
Usually NOT worth to have them certified.. the slab cost a lot more than the coin... unless u need them to complete a collection.
That's just it....I need them to complete my Complete Canadian Dimes with Varieties Set. You can view the set I am talking about by clicking on the link in my sig line. It only cost $16 for moderns which is OK....it's for my hobby.
Nice, but you are missing a lot.
do you care what grade the QV are?
and I have a lot of 10cents , like the young stuff..., all PL or SP whatever they call them...
just bought a whole collection and there is a lot.
unfortunately, NONE is graded.

On the QV coins it depends on the price. I try to get the best I can afford. Do you have any that I am missing?
I could be wrong, but MS coins from PL sets from the 1970s and onward are also called Numismatic BU, at least on ICCS holders. What a mess...
Dealing in Canadian and American coins and historical medals.
yes, it seems all the confusion started when they went from silver to clad.
yes I have.... tooooo many.
Am in the process "down Size" all my coins.
currently selling low end 1859 large cents, all raw. Sold over 100 in the last few weeks.
Will stop the cents for a bit and include 5 cents from 1858-1967
and then the 10 Ct from 1858 to 1967 and so on....
last week I picked up about 50 QV in a larger collection and about 100 younger... and tons of Nickel 10 cent coins right down to 2016. 17 album plus a few boxes...mostly Canadian.
the younger ones are ALL BUNC at whatever SP, Pl or whatever. many are cameo..
If you want I take a closer look at them before I sell them to a friend who in turn will list them on the Bay.
with the exception of the 1858 / 1558 and the 1889 I have them all. had a 89 with a hole and still got !95 for it.
wow
