1783 Hibernia - Is this a US Token or is it European?

YQQYQQ Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello, would appreciate some help with this one.
A friend handed me this token and suggested that it is "very scarce" and only a few are known.
A Ebay search indicated 2 similar coins available. Ok, 2 is not a lot, but also is not an indicator of rarity or it being scarce.
Does anyone know anything about this coin? origin, value ???
thank all and have a super weekend

John Stafford-Langan notes that "Pieces dated 1783 are contemporary copies."

I don't think they are worth a lot.

That one certainly saw a lot of use!

It may have been made to look like that. It was standard practice of forgery and evasion makers to make their coins deliberately look worn, in order to convince people that they had been in circulation for a while and therefore must be good.

It is an Irish evasion copper, but very well could have circulated in N. America as small change was always scarce.

That is one of many European coins used in early colonial America before there was any local or state coinage. Get yourself a large print redbook in spiral. There're all in there. Peace Roy

    YQQ,
The 1783 Irish is a non-regal halfpence... (AKA: Contemporary Counterfeit) they are scare! However they are much rarer in higher grades. Here's a pair from my personal collection.

Also, if you interested in the series (British & Irish) you can find a lot of information in the recent book! (Link)
