What kind of sharpie for Autograph Jersey - Success!!!!

I might have a chance to get this jersey autographed and I would like to know if anyone had opinions on kind of sharpie or other pen to use. Also is there a preference among collectors where to get it signed? This is a PC item so it doesn't really matter, just curious. I am leaning towards getting it signed on the number. I would appreciate any help. This will hopefully be my first jersey signature. Thank you in advance.

Working on the following sets
1980's and 1990's Topps Baseball BBCE FASC - Cello or Wax Boxes
1952 Bowman US Presidents PSA 7 & up
Pro Football Hall of Fame Indianapolis Colts PSA Registry Set
June 9th Cubs full ticket or stubs - 1981 to 2020
Andre Dawson Topps Basic registry PSA 10's
Mark Grace Topps Basic registry PSA 10's

When I first started getting autographs I used a black sharpie for everything. I soon realized that on most fabrics the ink from the sharpie spread wide causing the autos to look dumpy and in cases where the signed wrote small the letters sometimes bleed into each other and made the auto almost unreadable.
After that I started using fabric paint pens and markers. The are only a few bucks and come in many colors. Id suggest for you Jersey to have it signed on the #8 using a white paint pen.

This auto was done in black sharpie, you can see where the ink spread wide.

This was done with a silver paint pen. See how the letters are still crisp.

I concur with the silver paint pen. I have jerseys with sharpie and pen. The paint pen creates a nice tight signature and presents so much better.

  • Definitely silver paint pen IMO, just make sure it is prepped and ready to roll before handing it over! If you are not adding any additional inscriptions, I would have it signed either in the middle of the 8, or the bottom. Wouldn't do the top.

Nice auto Bishtw! Thank you your suggestion and everyone else for the confirmation.

Last autograph newbie question. Does it matter if it is a fine or medium fine paint pen? I have been unable to find a fine pen available in the timeframe I need it. Thanks again!

It is Andre Dawson. He’s been at Fergie Jenkins charity booth a few times this spring and never thought to bring Jersey. I want to be prepared this time. Just in case!

George Foster hangs with Fergie on occasion too, as the long as the Reds don't have a 'home' game. Just in case you have anything of his you want signed.

I have seen him a few times. Haven't had a chance to get an auto though. Seem like a nice guy.

I bought mine at Walmart. However you can find them at most office supply stores or Amazon. I would go with a fine point instead of medium point. Just my opinion.

Yes, I will be framing. I have one in mind, but it’s somewhat expensive, so I have the Jersey put away safely until I can get the frame.

Nice frame and hobby room! I am looking at getting something similar. However the one I want you can fit a baseball and a 8x10 photo. Instead of a photo I was thinking of putting a signed baseball and a Dawson PSA RC with the jersey. I think its around $200.

Fine tip permanent markers of Sharpie, I like these markers because color gold, silver, and bronze; can be written on many surfaces such as cloth, wood, plastic, etc. Marking lasts a long.

I prefer using a DecoColor paint marker to a Sharpie permanent marker. Very nice, Colts Fan. Well done!

  • Sharpie 30001, can write on many surfaces and the ink is bold and clear. These markers save quite a while.
