GU Stuff

How far is too far?

I know some of you out there have some really cool game used equipment, stadium seats, etc. Then there are the cards. They take a game used bat or jersey and cut it up into pieces to put into cards and create a kind of demand that didn't exist before. I have even seen cards with dirt in them.

Then there is this thing I just saw:

I guess when they cut up those bats to put in the cards they save the sawdust and sell that too!!

To me this is on another level even past the tablecloth that was used at the Manny Machado contract signing.

What do you guys think about this GU stuff? Are they destroying a piece of history to make more money? Are they helping more collectors get a piece of the action?

For me personally GU was cool when it first came out.
It's still relatively affordable and can be really attractive to the younger crowd.
While I don't agree with the sawdust. I can see how a kid would like some of this stuff and I would never take that away from them.
I think us older collectors need to remember this hobby was for kids and there should be an innocence to it while making it affordable for them.

personally, I think it is silly. I actually think that these ¨relic¨ pieces take away from the design of a card. I am sure I am in the minority, but I dont think ¨sick¨ patches or plain white swatches add anything at all to a card.

you know what though, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if patch cards etc. are what some people like to collect, i say great! the more collecting, the better.

to answer the OP´s question, I dont care what they do to current player jerseys, bats or whatever. we can just get more. retired players, I wish they wouldnt. I think you will find though, that most of the vintage relics are not anymore game used than the shirt I am wearing right now.

I would have a problem with cutting up old vintage memorabilia but modern stuff I don't care. I actually like game used stuff for my Emmitt collection.

Here's a link of some of the cards I have so far:

I only dislike this stuff when I fail to pull them from packs. Once I pull them I'm perfectly fine with it.

They started doing this to drum up more interest in the hobby

I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Getting more kids active in the hobby is what it's all about. I have four kids. I'd much rather share my passion / hobby with them rather than seeing them have their face stuck in their phones all day.
