Long-time Wanted piece! Sir Hans Sloane

I have for many years wanted one of the medals of Sir Hans Sloane wearing a soft cap (not the later wigged version). Sloane's vast personal collection(s) became the basis of the British Museum soon after his death in 1753, and much later contributed to both the British Library and The Natural History Museum.

Fnally got a copy today! Bronze Medal by Dassier, dated 1744, 55 millimeters.

It's not absolutely perfect (some spots on obverse), but it was priced accordingly.

Very pleased that a long quest was suddenly fulfilled.

Sir Hans Sloane, a physician, succeeded Sir Isaac Newton as President of the Royal Society about 1727, and Sloane himself was succeeded by the eminent English numismatist Martin Folkes about 1745.

Nice to get this one!

I lived in Sloane Square in London at one time. I would assume it was named after him.

@JBK Yes, it is. Streets around Harrods like Hans Road and Hans Crescent are named after him too (I believe the names of these places were not used until many years after Sloane's death). In the 1980s we had the 'Sloanies' and 'Sloane Rangers' very trendy kids who lived in that neighborhood. Sarah Ferguson was one of that bunch. Hans Sloane himself lived in Chelsea in the latter part of his life - IIRC, Chelsea Physic Garden might have been a part of his estate. Sloan is buried at Chelsea.

My old neighborhood, or close to it. I visited the Chelsea Physic Garden a couple years ago when I tool a trip to London. Central London had changed immensely in the prior 20 years, but Chelsea was literally exactly the same.

I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for one of these.
