How many 1878 “long nock” dies have been identified for:
Philadelphia 7/8 TF
Philadelphia 7 TF
San Francisco 7 TF
Carson City 7 TF
Looking for the number of reverse dies, not the number of varieties.
Thanks!

I've made a count using the VAMworld variety lists, but I hope some VAM experts can provide an independent opinion.
13 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7/8 TF.
8 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7 TF,
20 reverse dies for Philadelphia 8 TF.
8 reverse dies for San Francisco 7 TF.
7 reverse dies for Carson City 7 TF
(following VanAllen & Mallis assignations.)

Ar those all "long nock?"
Yes sir. Barring any exclusion that you might consider regarding the opinion you posed about short over long nock.

Thanks! Many of these do not seem to appear on the VAMworld pages - at least not in the major divisions for Philadelphia and San Francisco....is that correct or am I misunderstanding something.
Normal dies are not worth listing, IMHO.
VAMworld has separate headings for 7/8 TF long nock, and 7 TF long nock for Philadelphia, and a 7 TF long nock heading for San Francisco, but nothing for Carson.
coindeuce's list is:
13 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7/8 TF. (VAM world has 15 long nock)
8 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7 TF, (VAN world has 9 long nock)
20 reverse dies for Philadelphia 8 TF. (Not applicable - all are short nock)
8 reverse dies for San Francisco 7 TF. (VAM w has 9 long nock))
7 reverse dies for Carson City 7 TF (No long nock heading on VAMworld, but some are long nock)
(following VanAllen & Mallis assignations.)
Obviously, I'm missing something -- maybe a few of my marbles....
Just looked at all the 1878-CC varieties listed on VAMworld.
I count 11 long nock and 8 short nock - assuming each whole number is a new reverse die. (Although I've been told that is not necessarily the case)
Coindeuce has helped a lot in quoting numbers from VanAllen & Mallis directly.
CC's are 9 short I thought.....but I will not go count. Too bloody late for that.

John Roberts' book on 78-CC Morgans lists 9 different B1 reverse dies. The Dies are numbered B1a, B1b, B1c, ... Leroy was not always consistent with this meaning a distinct die starting with B2 reverses, but for the B1 reverses, it seems to be OK.

Distinctive reverse die A paired with two distinctive obverse dies would get two different VAM numbers.
OK. I understand the difficulty. Thanks for the help.
So the list from coindeuce is good with the modification from John Roberts:
13 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7/8 TF.
8 reverse dies for Philadelphia 7 TF,
8 reverse dies for San Francisco 7 TF.
7 reverse dies for Carson City 7 TF (9 per JRob)
Total of 38 long nock dies used.
