One fairly obvious comment, that I did not see made is that toning has different "types" whereas I believe there is less options for what a white coin means. I am better able to visually know what toned coins will sell for a premium compared to a white coin. If I am buying a coin because of its details, I prefer white so I can see them better, but rainbow toned jeffs and rosies trump white varieties of those series in my view
While I’m not a fan of blast white coins I do enjoy a PL frosty white Morgan 100 year old coins should have patina in my opinion. I like a well worn crusty also
Some series tone very nicely, like IHC proofs, Buff proofs, SLQ's, and others like Peace $$ and ASE's look better blast white. I do prefer toned IHC proofs like this:
and Buffalo proofs like this:
Toning is God's "CAC" endorsement of a coin........
Assuming we are talking about natural toning and blast white coins that haven't been dipped to death, the strike and luster make a difference, as does the type of toning. Some coins look great with toning and others are ugly, and the same is true for white coins.
In other words, I like both, and it depends!
GSAs, OBW rolls, Seated, Walkers. Anything old and Colorado-focused, CO nationals.

OINK
Awesome Buffaloes!! Mine tend to be closer to the Nic-a-Date quality!
Just wondering....... HOW do those "bullseye rainbow" examples of toning develop - - like the ones pictured by rainbowroosie?
