23rd Massachusetts Regiment Sutler token NGC MS66RB- a blazer!

23rd Mass Regiment Harvey Lewis, Sutler MA-S-23-10cNGC MS66RB ex. Eric P. Newman Collection, $1300

Here is a great piece of American history from the Civil War, and an extraordinary example of a Sutler token. These were used as a way to make change at the Sutler, Harvey Lewis, who was a type of vendor and precursor to modern post exchanges. He traveled with the 23rd Mass Regiment to provide items of comfort and things that were not issued to the troops like stationary, tobacco, etc.
Uncirculated sutler tokens are rare, as most were beat down doing their intended job in the camps. Tokens like this, from the storied Eric P. Newman Collection, are of great significance. Not only is it in the highest state of preservation, but after over 150 years it still exhibits a large amount of red (very nearly full red on the obverse, a little more subdued on the reverse.)
These were struck circa 1863 by Joseph H. Merriam of Boston. It is also interesting to note that this token is probably the first of its kind to use modular dies. The middle portion of the die would be changed to produce other denominations. It is known in 5c, 10c, 25c, and 50c.
Price includes shipping. It is the price I paid at Heritage 3 years ago.
Thank you for looking!
