I struggle trying to figure out coins with "original" surfaces. I see coins that I can tell were cleaned or soaped and watered at some point but a true original coin is hard to figure out.
So show me an old circulated type coin you think is original.

Wow - this can be a loaded question. Here are some that I think this are original... feedback welcomed...

Here is one of my favorites...
Thanks everyone who have posted so far.
What characteristics should I look for and avoid?
I would stay away from coins that look like they have had the original patina stripped off of them (unnaturally bright)
and coins with a lot of hairlines in the fields indicating cleaning.
This is probably my most original coin.
Dirt, it's a good thing.

That original look will depend on the series and grade. I like collecting Morgans and like Au58 key date coins that have a nice skin to them or toning and are not blast white, although underneath you know there is great luster. Here's an 86 -O, 93P and 91CC

Avoid the 1878-S trade dollar above! It looks like a Brillo job.
Ummm, I wouldn't characterize the last 3 as original but thanks everyone for posting.

You have some 'splaning to do Peace_dollar.
Here's a few that I think might be. You never really know.
This, on the other hand, is most likely secondary toning:

I'm confused? Does it not look original to you?

Maybe that's what he's driving at...
It's fine. The Peace Dollar is beautiful and I'm glad he posted it.
Lol I totally missed that part. My apologies!!! Haha I'm an idiot sometimes.
Of course, there is no way to know what's truly original, it just has to be pleasing to you.

Outstanding! Thanks for the link to that older thread...it was a very informative read.

There are lots of different looks to both original and non-original coins.
Pictures can help to a point. It still takes looking at lots of coins in person, and even then there are those that can be hard to tell.

This 1828 cent was a raw AU then later PCGS AU-55 which I agreed with. Had more frost than photos show and weakness in strike made it appear more worn than it actually was.
