Would be kind of cool to put a thread together with one example from each company just to get some laughs.

I remember collecting cards when grading companies didnt exist. I miss those days. We didnt even care about that stuff. We just collected because we loved the athletes and their glory. We didnt care about gem mints, and 9's and all that stuff. We just loved having a piece of our favorite athletes glory.

    Your record is skipping.

    But my words are true.

And they were understood the first time. Collect what and how you like; I don't think anyone here will argue with that, but you still have to be cognizant of your environment. When you walk into a biker bar do you repeatedly say 'I remember when bikers didn't exist. I miss those days.'?

I have just seen grading ruin peoples hobby, because they became too obsessed with the condition of their cards.

I've always cared about condition. Even as a kid when packs were .40. Heck I remember in 7th grade my buddy brought his binder. It was a special 1x event. I wanted to take a card out of the page. He looked at me like I was crazy.

Many are obsessed now because they have real money invested. These are not .40 packs were busting hoping for a $2 RC.

Even though this is a PSA forum, one of the most common refrains you'll see around here is 'Buy the card, not the holder'. There are some beautiful cards in 1/Poor holders due to a pinhole or staple holes (many snagged by members here at a great discount vs. their eye appeal), there are some here who only collect 10/Gem Mt examples worthy of that designation. To each their own. You'll see everything from sub-$1 raw cards to $100k+ cards posted here.

'TRIAPD' is probably the second most common refrain and describes the obsession with 'The Registry Is A Powerful Drug'.

    Welcome to the forums!

This is what guys that don’t have PSA gem mint 10’s usually say. :#

I have spent big money on rare cards also. Everyone is different. Hell, people back in the day used to stick them in their bike spokes for the sound effect. Im just sayingthat I collect for the love of the athlete. I dont let a scratch on a card ruin my life. I have a joe louis rookie card with a tuny stain on the back. I dont become obsessed with it, and lose sleep over it. I bought it for $450.00, because I love the great brown bomber, not because its a psa gem mint 10 or whatever.

Huckleberry, you're entitled to your beliefs and preferences but why on Earth did you join a graded card forum if you're so against the idea?

Its ridiculous how much grading has driven prices up. There are examples of it all over ebay.

Yes, this is the reason PSA and other legitimate companies stay in business and have such long wait times. With so many cards made, the cream of the crop rises to the top. People wanted the service and it works. I sadly admit, I've bought and sold hundreds of cards without checking the condition of the card in the holder 95% of the time. I left the hobby few years back and recently came back. In that few short years away I've noticed many changes. Not only have prices increased on prospect buy ins, (due to FOMO "Trout" syndrome), but unopened has exploded as well. Also nice to see the FF is still talked about. Collectors are getting more educated and prices have gone up.

Buy the card not the holder, as previously stated. As silly as it sounds I now look at the card in the holder. Being an advanced collector I should of been doing that all along. But I was acclimated to the flip being the final word. There are OC 8's in 10 slabs from all TPG. Sure I can buy it, but I may be the last one holding it as other collectors are more educated.

Grading is good, grading is bad. We all have our success and horror stories. One things for sure, grading has helped eat away at the junk wax era supply. Without grading, we'd all be sitting on a stack of raw 1989 Donruss Griffey RC's fighting over the buyers to make our $3. With grading, some of us make $200.

    Happy Hunting, Donovan
