Question for the PCGS holder experts if you will...

USMC_6115USMC_6115 Posts: 3,015 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm trying to track prices of the 2018 Palladium Coins in PCGS holders. I see a LOT more of the Flags than I do the Shields, both of which are "First Strike." What's the difference?

Search of the PCGS website was not fruitful :)
Thanks!

    Is this helpful?

    https://www.pcgs.com/prices/priceguidedetail.aspx?ms=1&pr=1&sp=1&c=152898&title=palladium+$25+eagle

Select the tab for Proof for 2018. It defaults to MS which are the 2017 Pds.

Click on “2018-W $25 Palladium PRDCAM”

Click on “Related Coin and Varities.”

Click on “2018-W $25 Palladium First Strike, DC” then scroll down for the auction prices.

I guess I am just trying to see if there is any difference between the 2 First Strikes with the Flag or Shield.. I don't see it there

Slabs with flags usually have a “famous” person’s signature.

If the shield is gold, then it is the PCGS Gold Shield, more info here: https://www.pcgs.com/goldshield

    Hope that helps.

That does help... but I'm wondering why there are so many more Flags than Shields... seems like it's at least 10 to 1..

The shield was a more expensive service.

    IMO

The flag/signed slabs are generally handpicked coins by a big/bulk submitter/dealer who has some sort of agreement with a signer and submits many coins with a minimum grade for slabbing.

Gold Shield, as @djm stated is more expensive and generally not used, as above, since it is an unneeded expense because they already have a custom flag slab.

    Summary:

    Flag = Dealer/Bulk submitters (“The Big Boys/Girls”)

Gold Shield = Anyone else who is willing to pay the fee
