Hello all,
I have this Canada 1874H 25 cent coin with 3 A's in CVNVDV that look like V's.
the 3 A's appear to resemble V's.
Is this a typical example of a grease filled die? or is it something else?
the H mint mark on the other side also seems to have a clearly impaired cross bar.
does this qualify as Mint-Errors?
thanks everyone for your comments.

Interesting, I haven't heard of a variety as shown.

Very odd with the V-A swap. The A in REGINA is proper width at top (wider flat section at top). In CANADA the A's are actual flipped V's. They match the V in VICTORIA. Its a substitution one could make when setting lead type in print/publishing but not really for this type of application. Can't imagine this was accidental as these compositions are sculpted in clay and not set with solid font sets (my understanding anyway--and my 2 cents .
Gene, I think it is an error and not a variety.
I had another which I had listed and sold on Feebay. However, the other had all cross bars on the A's visible ever so slightly. the AV issue is known with the 1872H quarters and 50 cent pieces. These are even recognized by ICCS.... and wow, that should mean something?? and collectors are hunting these.
so I am wondering if my quarter with 3 A/V's is a seller or a keeper.??
I still believe that a grease filled die is most likely the cause.
.
There are not toooooo many known. it will be just a matter of time and more collectore will hava to have one......just like with the 1872 quarter AV and the 50 cent 1872 AV. on these 2 it is the AV in Victoria only. mine is 3x in Canada.
Check out coinsandcanada.com for all the varieties and errors. Peace Roy

I am very familiar with that site and i much respect their content.
I also know that they are often not exactly right.
.
Ok, I also have that one, plus another
and two 1872's 72 is packed away right now)
I would guess that some people here have all sort of comments what it could be, or what it is.
all I can say is what the camera lens shows.
I am not saying for sure what it is. But I believe it could be die cracks?
on the other hand, I have seen some pretty straight and solid cross bars on the V's which sort of rules out die breakes/ cracks.
this one, the best 1872 25 cent AV, Is stashed away at the moment.
