Did anyone follow this toned Morgan result on GC?
I liked this one and knew it would do well, but I was still surprised to see it reach $15,936.75 with the buyer’s fee.
Was anyone else surprised at the final price?
Congrats to the consignor and to GC!

Wow. Clearly I still have no understanding of the market for these. I think toned Morgans will likely always be "a thing" since they often came out of the bag that way, but prices at this level might not last forever. This isn't an area I'd be comfortable playing in. CU Price Guide for the 83-O is $400 at MS66.
I can only afford the low end toners. Still paying above PCGS price guides for many of them but not too much...I try to stay at MS64 and higher but that's tough...it doesnt take much for the prices to start to climb....that is a nicely toned coin....if only I'd hit the lottery...
Don't quote me on that.
Never mind
I didn’t see it on his page.
It was on the page of vivid_coins, who is not aurora borealis.
I do think it would take someone like aurora to throw that many funds at a coin like that.
This coin has a lot going for it. MS66 CAC, full obverse rainbow toning, and textile toning. Overall, it's a very clean and pleasing coin from the photos. In hand, the colors may really pop.
I just checked and I stand corrected. You are right it was posted on vivid coins page. I’ll edit my post. Thanks
I was following it. I was outbid miles before the end but It doesnt really surprise me.
It looked wonderful and real.
No worries!
I continue to be impressed by the amount of money being spent on coins. Certain segments seem healthy and this is an example of that.
I assume the two (or more) that went hard at this have seen it in person at some point before. I can't imagine bidding so high without a lot viewing, just from pictures is such a gamble.
Too much! $3k is more like it. Maybe 4k if the luster is BLAZING.
Very nice coin!
16K !?!?!? I'll pass
The problem is that the money is being spent in small segments not across the broad spectrum of all coins which is not healthy.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I was the underbidder...I thought I would buy it for sure, but someone had a huge bid. As Yosef said the color was real and it was gorgeous in hand. I'm OK with not buying however. Not sure what I would have done with it afterwards....
I think the bigger problem is income distribution in general: "The problem is that the money is being spent made in small segments not across the broad spectrum of all coins which is not healthy."
As for what you would have done with it, I hope you would look at it and not put it in a SDB.
I have two toned Seated Dollars that I love looking at. One is with me and one is locked away. I should really keep both with me.
That's one fugly Morgan right there. Worth about $350-$400 if you can get her clean.
Not for me. Color looks 'fishy' to me.

I agree and I'd be willing to pay up to a 50% premium to buy it......... but that wouldn't even get me close.
Not into the toned coin area. But I’m curious why the great majority of these coins seem to have great toning on the obverse. Simple math would stipulate about a 50/50 split on obverse and reverse, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. To each his own.
Going to be a little bit of a azz here (pardon please), but the grade/sticker would not be what I would lead off with in describing the coin as having a lot going for it. Shouldn't we be focusing on the coin's features as primary before the very secondary plastic descriptions?
I'm not a Morgan dollar fan, but it would be fun to own a screamer like this one at a reasonable price. That's a "duh" for most of us.

Yep, they are, as shown in this current Legend Auction lot - the reverse toners just don't bring this kind of price so they aren't posted as often.
Thank you for bidding CNN!

No offense taken but I’ve noticed that even for monster toners, high grade and CAC help with the price, and we are talking about the price here.
