PCGS cutting main page listing of registry sets

I just noticed on the Early Proof Jefferson main registry page that PCGS has cut the current set list to the top 20 only. The other eight sets are not listed on the main page anymore; you have to click on the link to see the entire list to bring them up. On the early Proof Jeffs, this kicked off two people who have their sets more than 50 percent complete and relegated BNE's wonderful brilliant collection to the "secondary list" when he has the No. 3 finest all time total set including cameos. What's at work here, PCGS trying to make it more exclusive or harder to make the main registry set page? Are there doing this on other registry sets as well? I don't follow them as close as I do the Jeffs. Randy

  • It used to be you would only see the top 5 finest. You would have to click to see the rest. I guess 20 is better than 5...

Thanks for the institutional memory, Carl. In checking other registry sets, all appear to have been lopped to the top 20 only on the main page ...

They also just did it for the Kennedy proof set. It actually makes sense when you consider the growth in the number of sets. With all of them loading at once, the page loads slow down. If the registry keeps growing, sooner or later, the page would become intolerably slow.

You are right, Russ... Just found this under Registry News:

At the present time, we are displaying all current sets on a page. Because many categories now have upwards of 50 sets listed and some have basic and variety sets on the same page, we will be limiting the display to 20 sets per category. Entire lists will still be viewable by clicking on the view all sets link.

Hey, RGL! Thanks for noticing my brilliant set! Sometimes I wonder whether anyone saw it so far down on the list -- even when it was on the main page. I really like that set: unfortunately PCGS' bias in favor of cameos/deep cameos (don't get me wrong I LOVE LOVE LOVE those, too) causes top-grade brilliant coins to get lost in the shuffle.

I guess the main page was starting to get cluttered. I'll edit my descriptions so people know where to find it if so inclined.

    P.S. If anyone knows where I can find a '64 Jeff in PR70, or a '51 in PR68, please PM me!image

it is REALLY bad when your (i.e. my) set is #21

This can do a few things. Heat up the competition in the higher sets, reduce interest all together, switch sets - go to varieties with no varieties. I think its a good idea, I did not think my set was worthy yet of being on the main page with the super sets.

Gunk, Now your going to buy some more coins - I can feel it. I would start with he early 30's stuff, actually I am almost have the 30's done just not all slabbed or posted yet. You can pick up nice examples cheap. Get that 31-S you have always wanted. Also the Solid date 20's can be had cheap in Gem RD.
  • BNE...how could your "brilliant" set not be noticed!!!! NICKEL TRIUMPH 750....STILL ON THE FRONT PAGE

I do think it a disservice to BNE to shuttle his brilliant set of brilliant Jeff proofs off to another page. BNE, I can only dream of putting together the coins you have -- and you did it twice over! I guess you have to buy another round of pop-top '38-42 coins to get that set back to the first page where it belongs. I like your statement, though, of "mentally borrowing'' those coins from your all-time (cameo) set. I will crack the Top 20 when I get around to adding my modest set in the coming week, but it would totally disregard reality to rate BNE's partial brilliants below my complete set. Regards, RGL
  • I see some Proof 68's in the BNE future. Even with the early Proofs at 67 this would be a top pop and unbeatable set. This would beat my goal of having the highest 0% DCAM set (by about a mile). Just my way of having fun............Still gotta like that Honeycutt set.

Honeycutt's a piker ... sitting there with two fantastic coins he does not bother to list to perhaps shoot to the top. And, of the 19-coins listed, there are a grand total of 13 better Jeff proofs on three dates ... lol. And, his other sets as well ... Name the lyrics: "How do you think he does it? I don't know. What makes him so good?'' -- aside from a deep wallet. All respect, Honeycutt for your numismatic accomplishments, which involve a lot more work than writing a check ... you are to be respected and admired for living our dream .... Come, greet your worshipers!

The top twenty is much better than only the top 5 but maybe a second page would help?
