313 pieces originally struck in gold, honoring the United Nations.
Out of concern that the Essai looked too much like a coin, comparable in size and weight to a French 100-franc gold piece and therefore possibly in violation of the Gold Act, the dies and pieces already minted were destroyed.
How many are still in existence?

The Kosoff article states that President Nixon ended the gold restrictions, it was actually President Ford.
