1971D Jefferson. Missing neck obverse. Missing design reverse.

Is this a grease error??? Or DD??

Neck looks like either grease or polish.

Polished die. You can see the numerous polish lines

Ok sweet. Going in my collection for a great reference. Thanks for the feedback. Polished die did come across my mind. So did other thoughts. It’s always good to get others opinions. I’m still learning. Whoop whoop! Learn something new everyday or every other day. It fascinates me when I hunt thru coins. I’ve only been into coins about 5 months now. It’s like wow. There is so much to learn. But it also gets my interest. And I don’t know why all of a sudden I became so into coins. Hobbie maybe. Novelty maybe. Discovery something that makes me feel alive. Or maybe I’m so depressed in life. And looking at coins or just hunting thru coins distracts me from reality. And puts me in a coin world. Everyone ask me what’s coin world.

    Die polish, not grease.

I might be wrong but I see those angled lines going upward from either side of the dome quite often on nickels from the mid 60s and into this era. I always assumed they were the result of clashes dies.

In the case of your coin, if there were clashed dies then they would have been polished to remove the clash marks. Maybe that is how TJ lost his neck.

Timbobb, Yes there is much to learn about coins and it is great it has caught your interest. Hope you are still enjoying it many years from now. It can be a great distraction when you have too many other things going on in your head. You have many good times coming in coin collecting & life, just hang in there. Sometimes it is darkest right before the dawn. There are plenty of smart people here on the boards to help you learn about coins and plenty of nice people to talk to if you need help or advise with other matters. You are as much a part of the group here as any other member.

Good things happen in life & the hobby of coin collecting, it just never happens when you want it to.
Wishing you all the best! :)

I’ve also noticed older nickels in this era that looked like this. But why is the design missing on bothe sides of the dome. They must have polished that design away maybe?

If it is a low spot on the coin that would be the first to go in a polish.
