Any suggestions on how to research this?
Call the folks up on Oak Island!
you speak my mind ..
No kidding.. if anyone will be able to find out, its them.
And who knows, it might be an important piece .
Laughed when I read the comment but perhaps...
Possibly a piece of metal from a very old shipwreck. Not a coin.
If it is numismatic, it could be something extremely worn down and from ancient or medieval India, but it may not be numismatic. Possibly too large.
Is it magnetic? Looks like a shard of a decorative metal object. Maybe the holy grail! Peace Roy

Yes, it could be part of the Holy Grail. How far was it found from Oak Island?
Maybe start with looking up shipwrecks in the area it was found
