1990-91 Score American Hockey Craig Simpson oddity; what is this?

The one on the left #58 is the Canadian version and is real, the one on the right #2 is in question. The person who owns it says he thinks it is a fake, but why would anyone fake this card? He says the stock is thinner and has a different gloss than the originals. Any thoughts?
