edited because I’m dumb. There are 354 straight PSA 9s, not 64.

Hey I love posts like this...... I did not realize how few psa 9 Ozzie’s there are
Cool and insightful analysis. PSA 9 would probably be tough to pull from a pack. The centering on this card is just awful. I have about 20 raw copies of the 79 smith and all of them have a tilt in combination with 85/15 or 90/10 top/bottom centering.

Great topic!

Amazing that this card exists in this condition. The card is double printed and it’s still nearly impossible to find one that nice.
It seems that six or seven years ago 78's and 79's were a big topic on the boards. 70's unopened in general was the driving topic. Has it become so prohibitively expensive as to drop in popularity?
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Here's a theory...in addition to what others have said, the card tends to have eye appeal issues that are not penalized by PSA (tilt, etc.) This may result in many of the 9s that do exist being "ugly 9s" that are tougher to sell.
I have a lot of nostalgic fondness for the 1979 Topps set. But Jeez, is there ever a team banner that looks parallel to the bottom of the card?! Holy OCD Batman
In a sense, yes. I got lucky and was able to bust a ton of 1978 Topps just at the end time period of what most would consider "affordable". I would be a moron to do what I did in the early 2000's now. So, yeah .... air has been taken out of the balloon because this stuff is in the stratosphere and heading higher now. I know for a fact that there are a bunch still involved (not here) but you have to open the wallet. Even then not many are busting this stuff on the reg anymore once purchased that I know about.
I bought a 1978 Topps Baseball 3 box rack case in 2004 for $2,700 from BBCE. Today there is one available on BBCE for 10 grand. Where is it in another 10 to 15 years IF even available anymore?

Also, there is a 1980 Topps baseball wax case available on BBCE for 25 grand. Nuckin Futs.

Probably 15 give or take a couple out of a 20 box wax case but I don't profess to be an expert on collation from this year. That's just based on box quantity vs cards in the set.

I feel like I’ve asked that question here. Are they supposed to be parallel? I assume yes but it sure is tough finding one.
There may have been a thread on this topic in the past.
Regardless, I thought I read somewhere that the banners are angled. The right side is slightly closer to the frame of the photo than the left, which is obscured a bit by the Topps logo. So the banner tilts up going from left to right. I am sure if someone did exact measurements on a few cards this would be proven out.
Sweet! Now im going to buy one because of the OP’s analysis.

So before anyone breaks out their wallets I want to make sure I’m reading the pop report right. 354 psa 9. 290 with qualifiers. Does that mean what I said in op that the actual straight 9 pop is 354-290=64 or these numbers are independent? If the latter I will delete the text in the op.
No, it means there are 354 unqualified 9s and 290 qualified 9s.
Thank you. Post edited.
Check out the opc version...talk about low pop...and they go for way less than Topps!
good point, I love the OPC versions of key rookies. I also prefer the card stock they used. much brighter backs.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Agreed. A straight 9 is pop 35, PSA 10 is pop 2.

Agreed. The stats are easier to read on OPC cards in my opinion, especially 1976 and 1979.
