Welcome. Cool item. I’m not an expert in this field at all....but I’d strongly suspect that you’d need to have it graded/authenticated before realizing its peak value.
Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.
So there are two listings at inflated prices, but what are the prices of magazines that have sold? That's what you need to be looking for. While I have no idea about this magazine and its value, I think if it was really worth a couple grand, it would be a known entity in the collecting community. Similar to the first Sports Illustrated with Eddie Matthews or the 1962 Life magazine with Elizabeth Taylor on the front and Mantle and Maris Post cards inside. Both of these are well known, but can be had for under $250 each. In addition to that, your magazine isn't a main stream magazine. Again, I have no idea on value.
OK, so I just went and looked at ended ebay listings and one sold for $8 shipped on November 2nd.
There are not a lot of these on ebay because they are not worth anything. This magazine has a bar code on it meaning it was sold at retail. There were thousands of these printed. It is not rare by ant stretch of the imagination. You can find 5 cent carrds on ebay people are listing for thousands. Means nothing. Sorry.
The $8 example on ebay does say that it "sold for $8". Also, if completed auction amounts are in green, that means it sold for that. There's also a 1990 Fleer Uribe card on ebay for thousands of dollars, but it's worth around five cents. If you contact the memorabilia site, ask them if they want to purchase yours.
I understand that you want it to be valuable, but a similar one recently sold on ebay for $8. Just because someone is asking a huge price, doesn't mean it's worth that amount. Again, if this was worth several thousands of dollars it would be known in the hobby, similar to 1986 fleer basketball or 1991 Desert Storm or the SI Kids Tiger Woods.
If you know an auction house that is asking thousands of dollars for one, ask them about it and see if they are interested in buying yours.
This looks more like a niche item for hardcore Jordan collectors and it probably would have had more value had it been a young MJ on the cover not Bird. I check ebay for many different early to mid 80's Jordan items including magazines on a weekly basis and I can honestly say that those two quoted prices above are pretty outrageous.
I'd recommend searching for other magazines from that same year that either have Jordan on the cover or an article about him like yours has to find a comparable value. I know that he has a few Sports Illustrated mags from around that time frame with him on the cover and their pricing doesn't come anywhere close to what the two sellers on Amazon were asking.
I really wouldn't waste money authenticating or grading any magazine. What's to authenticate? Never heard of fake magazines LOL. Here is a Basketball Scene with MJ on the cover from 1990 that sold for $6.99.
Again, your best bet is to offer your magazine to sportsmemorbila.com. Did you do that? See how much they will give you for yours. That will tell you a lot. If you look at completed auctions for all Basketball Scene magazines, the highest priced one that sold was a best offer with a listing price of $24. Some of the mags went back to 1971 with Jabbar on the cover. I believe your mag could sell anywhere between $8 and maybe $20 if marketed correctly. I can't see anyone paying thousands of dollars because a magazine had an article about Jordan in it. Again, i would offer the mag to the auction house and see what they say. My guess is that they won't want to buy it.
I have never heard of PSA authenticating a non-autographed magazine. What does that even mean? I don't understand how the one seller of a similar copy is claiming that the magazine was already authenticated.
I know that you are hoping that this is a big money item, but as many have pointed out, it simply isn't.
The magazine on the memorabilia site has not been graded by CGC. If it was, it would be encapsulated just like PSA cards. They may have an authentication side as well, I have no idea. As far as the one that sold, this may be the one. It's the only one I can find now. And if it is, my apologies for being incorrect.
As far as how your sports memorabilia company gets their stuff, they have a link where you can tell them what you have to sell. It doesn't appear to be limited to who can sell. https://www.sportsmemorabilia.com/sellitem.php And in terms of authenticating the magazine, all they are doing is guaranteeing that the magazine is real. The authentication process is done by themselves. At this point, I certainly would not go through CGC for authentication. If you really want to know if it's valuable, put it up on ebay for a high price and do a best offer option. If it has value, you will get offers.
Yes, we all know that CGC does authentication. I was stating that PSA does not offer this service and the link that you provided does not show an encapsulated magazine. This is where the confusion comes from.
You keep asking for "proof" and you keep shooting down everyone's opinion and links that have been provided to you.
I'm not sure what else you want here.
We provided you with many answers, even though they unfortunately aren't the ones that you had hoped for.
I agree. No need to authenticate it. I do believe that Sports Memorbilia is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. I really do. The only reason they authenticate it is because, if you read their website, they personally authenticate everything they sale. They do the authentication themselves. Again, I would go through their website and offer to them for sale or put it on ebay.

Here's a sold listing for a January 1985 Hoops mag with Jordan wearing his rookie jersey on the cover that sold for $337 at auction. Without MJ on the cover its probably not going to sell as much as this one did.
