1835 Bust Quarter Newps

I recently picked up 3 new bust quarters from 1835 bringing my total for that year to 10. There are 8 die marriages, I have 5 of them so have some duplicates in the die marriages. Two that I got in a Great Collections acutions were in ANACS holders and looked to me to be graded right at VG08 and VG10. So bid, won, and then crossed them to PCGS to be part of my small bust quarter grading set. I needed VG08 and VG10 for the grading set:

Now they are off with everything else to CAC and we will see if they are strong for the grade or not. Seems to be alot of chatter on each but maybe that is normal for these grades (?).

The 3rd one was one of 2 lots I really liked at the HA auction at FUN. Normally, a 61 grade is about as bad as one can get for a MS grade, but I felt this one was really nice - just a few light scratches in the fields justifying the grade, otherwise strong luster. In an older PCGS holder - Gen 4.4 holder that was used 2005-2011. The holder itself was not too messed up, and I interpreted that to mean it sat somewhere in a collection for the past decade without being passed around at auctions and banged up. So if correct, it came from someone who keeps the coins and does not flip. Of course that is speculation and trying to understand why as far as I could tell, a nice coin like this was being sold.

So here it is below. Nearly blast white with a touch of tone, strong luster, a bit of chatter and light scratches consistent with the grade. We will see if it gets the bean. Also, shown are my 45's for the die marriage. I just love them all, so I keep buying when I get nice ones for the grade.

Best, SH

This one is in a P45+ holder after crossing, not imaged in its new holder yet.

This one is a quite contrast to the other 2 B1's, toning is strong and brown-black. But probably not had human assistance at least for a few decades. I gotta say that I like this kind of toning when it looks right.

A lot of meat on that coin for a VG 08 grade.

I like them in EF 45 , I collect them in EF 45

All four are nice. On the two VG coins, the picture size presumably exaggerates how noticeable the "chatter" is in the fields. Concurrently, I have had coins in my series which have "details" graded though the wear was less. (One is an XF.)

My favorite series to collect. There is so much to study and learn about all the die marriages that it keeps me interested. Love the group.

Hi SHD. Appreciate your post, as usual. Since you are building an all PCGS grading set, I'm curious regarding sending to CAC. Are you seeking validation for each coin's grade and/or are you trying to add another layer of "grade" by doing so - thus (assuming each get a green bean) a grading set of "B" coins for each grade?

Edited to add: and if a coin doesn't bean, how will that coin be treated by you regarding having a grading set?

    Hi Catbert,
All excellent questions. I won't decide about answers until I see if they are CAC or not. I am suspecting the VG08 and VG10 won't make it, but you never know. But they were inexpensive and I want a basic PCGS grading set for these from 08 to 62 (sans 60). But I always want to know if a coin makes CAC and if not, then try to understand why it failed. If these fail, the it will help me in making decisions on these grades in the future.

    Best, SH
