In 1851 No one was sure what to call the new 3-cent silver coins

This little letter gets straight to the point -- what do we call the new 3-cent silver coin?
The word "trime" was not used. Mint and most other documents usually call the coin "3-cent," "3-cent piece," or "3-cent silver." So far, I have not found a formal reply to the above letter, except the annotation at bottom left: "Answered, for silver, perhaps for gold, not for copper." If it turns up, maybe it will give us a definitive title for these little slips of silver. And -- it'll only be 170 years late!

When did they start calling them fish scales?
Don't know. Sounds like a good look-up phrase on NNP.
