Does anyone remember Emmett Ashford??

He was the first African-American Umpire in MLB, but that's not what he should be remembered for. The guy was a hoot and though I have never read or heard as much, it seems clear that Leslie Nielsen modeled his "Naked Gun" routine after him, the scene where he's an umpire and MoonWalks when calling a third strike. Heck, Ashford was must-watch whenever he dusted off Home Plate.

He strolled into my thoughts this morning.

If you are interested in umpires, read "The Umpire Strikes Back" by Ron Luciano, very informative and some stories that are guaranteed to make you laugh.

I know its not technically a poll but I think the no's would be way ahead

I think anyone who followed MLB in the 60's should remember him and his flamboyant style, so perhaps it's a generational thing.
