A Carson City Mint mystery solved through member collaboration.

A few weeks ago, several members combined their talents to solve a persistent numismatic mystery. Here's another example of members collaborating to uncover actual events. It this case: "When were the first silver dollars struck at the Carson Mint?"

Bob - You did the work! Now write it up for publication so everyone can know! (I offer any assistance I have for you....)
Anyone know why the NV newspapers reported that the CC Mint coined 1,400 silver dollars on
Feb. 13th, 1873? Saw it a couple of years ago...doesn't seem to fit the Numismatic reference books mintage total
for the 1873-CC silver dollars... of 2,300; 1,000 in January and 1,300 in March....
source NV Daily Appeal Feb. 14th...
thanks back to the briny deep
Thank you all for your hard work and sharing !!!
Have not gone beyond 1870 as of yet.

Dunno, but I would trust the Mint documents more than a newspaper. The reference books are most likely based on the Mint annual report or internal documents.
Sounds like a simple typo.

Regarding 1873-CC 1,400 Feb. Fair enough...
Saturday evening Feb. 5 1870 Gold Hill Daily Evening News
taken from the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise (Mark Twain
once worked there as a reporter)
First Coin Struck At The Mint.-
We yesterday saw and examined a silver dollar, which is the
first coin of any kind struck off at the Carson Mint. It was brought
to this city (VC) by George Tuffly, of Carson, who borrowed it of
Colonel Curry, Superintendent of the Mint, for the purpose
of showing it to friends here. The coin presents a handsome
appearance, but is slightly above the standard weight. The dies
will be a little altered, when the work of making dollars will
at once be commenced. Next week, a lot of $5, $10, and $20 gold
pieces will be coined from gold bullion from Pine Grove.
The mint mark on the coins will be "C.C."-for Carson
City. So says the Enterprise of this morning..
The Virginia City Territorial Enterprise should have the original
article...
I know CC Super Curry sent a number of these coins to SFBM Super
LaGrange....to show off their handiwork...they had a close professional relationship....
Weekly Alta California Feb. 12, 1870
Carson City, February 4th.
The first coin was issued from the United States Branch Mint in this city,
yesterday evening. It is in full operation, but coining only silver dollars,
per special order of H.F. Rice, about seven hundred will be coined for
pocket pieces.
Other newspapers list 1,000 pieces first coined and that they were selling for $1.25
as pocket pieces in Marysville California....
